Overview

Mark your calendars and join us to celebrate 25 years of impact through language! The Translator Interpreter Program (TIP) invites you to a special symposium exploring "The Future of Language Advocacy."

Hear from co-founders Fatema Sumar '01 and Joyce Muchan '97, and a panel of diverse members of the language community. Work in an interdisciplinary group setting to develop solutions to a challenge. Meet like-minded language advocates and build ideas and momentum for the future of language.

Saturday, November 15, 2025 from 10 AM - 3 PM at Biotech G10 (215 Tower Rd, Ithaca, NY 14853). Lunch and refreshments provided. Dress code: business casual. Not required, but recommended to attend entire event

Keynote Speaker: Fatema Sumar '01
Executive Director, Harvard Center for International Development
TIP Co-founder

Fatema Z. Sumar is the Executive Director of the Harvard Center for International Development (CID) and an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School where she teaches policy design and development diplomacy. She has a distinguished career as a practitioner in the US government and civil society.

Joyce Muchan '97
Former Assistant Director of Student Development
TIP Co-founder

Joyce Muchan currently serves on the North Country Human Trafficking Task Force, Southern Tier Human Trafficking Task Force, NYS Anti-Trafficking Working Group, and NYFEM (New York Equality Model). She is also the founder of allvoicesinternational.org.

Jadon Geathers
Graduate School Dean’s Scholar

Jadon Geathers is a Graduate School Dean’s Scholar and PhD student in Information Science at Cornell University’s Future of Learning Lab, advised by René Kizilcec. His research develops and evaluates AI conversational agents that support personalized and adaptive learning.

Meejeong Song
Senior Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies

Meejeong Song is a senior lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies and is a coordinator of the Korean Language Program. She has been at Cornell for 25 years and has experience teaching all levels of Korean.

Jose Tzul
Board Member and Student of Open Doors English

Jose Tzul is a Board Member and Student of Open Doors English, a second language school for adults in Ithaca. From Guatemala, his first language is Spanish and his indigenous language is Kiche. He is also a church leader in King Ferry, NY.
