Help Support Language Access

The Cornell Translator Interpreter Program (TIP) relies on faculty volunteers to verify student language proficiency before students begin taking translation and interpretation cases.

Because TIP is a student-run program, faculty evaluation is an essential step that ensures our partner organizations receive accurate, high-quality language services.

Why We Are Expanding Our Faculty Network

Currently, language approvals are conducted by Cornell faculty. However:

- Cornell faculty represent a limited number of languages
- We sometimes receive case requests for languages without available faculty to approve volunteers
- Some students cannot volunteer because no faculty member is available to approve their language ability

To address this, TIP is expanding its network to include language faculty and retired language faculty from other institutions.

This expands our capacity to fulfill interpretation and translation requests and serve more communities.

What Faculty Volunteers Do

Faculty partners help by conducting a brief language evaluation for students who want to join the TIP volunteer database.

1. Your name, email, and language(s) will be listed on our Faculty List

2. If a prospective student volunteer seeks to become approved in your language, they will contact you to schedule a short virtual meeting.

3. TIP will provide evaluation materials and instructions.

4. You administer a ~15 minute evaluation.

5. You submit a brief online form with your recommendation.

How to Participate

If you are interested in becoming a TIP Faculty Partner, please email us at translator@cornell.edu

Thank you! We are deeply grateful to the faculty partners who volunteer their time. Your support is a crucial step in enabling students to provide language access for organizations and communities in need.

We welcome faculty participation in any language.

Featured Faculty Partners

"It is particularly inspiring to see the enthusiasm of Cornell students who are Portuguese speakers volunteering to assist the local Portuguese-speaking community. Some students are eager to expand their language skills beyond the classroom, gaining experience in specialized fields like medical or legal translation. Others are motivated by a desire to connect with the community and ensure that non-English speakers have equal access to vital services."
