The mission of this group is to read contemporary texts that engage with current issues on Brazilian culture, literature, and society; bridging disciplines such as literature, anthropology, urban studies, architecture, law, and visual studies. From the auto-ethnography of the Yanomami shaman Davi Kopenawa, to the wave of protests of 2013, to literary works from the peripheries of São Paulo and the favelas of Rio and the environmental issues on the Amazon rainforest. Our group’s idea is to focus on recent debates that work on a critical displacement of fixed categories—such as subject and object, margin and center, territory and state—by trying to develop new ways of reading the interplay between aesthetic, political, and social discourses.

The primary purpose of the society is to meet every week to listen to a colleague explain his or her research. This creates valuable opportunities for researchers to practice giving technical presentations and to generate new research collaborations. Additional guest speakers from inside or outside Cornell may be invited to speak on technical or non-technical topics of interest to the EDS community. Occasional social events may be organized through EDS but the primary purpose is to generate scholarly discussion of science and engineering.

Evo-group is a inter-departmental graduate student run organization that unites undergraduate, graduate students, post-docs, and faculty interested in evolutionary biology. We hold monthly seminars in which students, post-docs, and faculty present their research which they are conducting at Cornell. All Cornell community members are welcome to attend these seminars. We also hold annual meetings in which all evo-group members participate in order to prioritize and plan future directions. We additionally host a one day symposium that highlights a particular topic in evolutionary biology and includes local speakers from nearby Universities in addition to speakers from across Cornell departments.

The primary purpose of Expanding Your Horizons is to organize a day-long conference in the spring semester which will be open to 7-9th grade girls from all over New York state. The goals of the conference are to stimulate the participants’ interest in math and science through hands-on activities, to provide them with female scientist role models (who are Cornell University graduate and undergraduate students), and to foster awareness of opportunities in math and science-related careers. The Cornell University Graduate and Professional Student Assembly serves as an official voice for the the nearly 7,000 graduate and professional students at Cornell. In addition to representing the students in matters of university governance, the GPSA has the responsibility for setting and administering the Student Activity Fee for graduate and professional students.

The GPSA is a valuable component of graduate or professional education for those who hope to be affiliated with a university in the future. The GPSA regularly meets with the President and Provost, and it sends representatives to the Employee Assembly, the undergraduate Student Assembly, and the Faculty Senate. Involvement in the GPSA can provide valuable experience in the mechanics of shared governance in a university setting.

Every graduate and professional student at Cornell can have a voice in the GPSA, and we’re working to encourage each other to speak up to make sure everybody is heard! Each graduate or professional field can send a representative to the GPSA – current representatives and vacancies are listed on the Assembly website – and any graduate student can serve on a GPSA committee.
