Building inclusive research and designing supportive outreach and networking for growing talents

Outreach programs in STEM provide powerful opportunities for learning. For kids, these programs can cultivate life-long interests in STEM topics and even ignite the pursuit of STEM- related careers. However, communication and perceptual differences/disabilities make accessing community spaces and outreach materials inaccessible for many people. Furthermore, institutional opportunities to train STEM students in disability justice, accessibility and inclusive practices are rare.

This team’s goal is to bring Cornell STEM students, TST BOCES students and the Lab of Ornithology together to enhance their ability to communicate STEM-related content and improve the impact of outreach programs. Leveraging a shared interest in birds, the team is building lasting relationships across the community to support these goals.

They receive on-going training designed to help them craft a critical lens, and become cognizant of aspects within our society that are nuances of sexual violence and bias. In turn, they actively engage their peers to help them become more aware of these issues. They also inform the students of the many supportive campus and community resources that are available to assist individuals who have been impacted by any form of sexual misconduct. Through programming, students learn how to cultivate healthy relationships in intentional ways, and how to be an active bystander within their communities.

A CORE RA is:
• A peer leader, educator, and role model in their community.
• Additional resource for RA staff and students on topics surrounding sexual violence and misconduct prevention.
• Representative of the community on CORE team, and in large-scale and campus-wide efforts
• NOT an expert, but someone who is continuously learning and gaining skills to transfer to community.

During the year CORE RAs will focus on the following (but not limited to) themes:
• Affirmative consent education
• Bystander education and intervention strategies
• Societal and media literacy as it pertains to the pervasiveness of sexual violence and gender constructs
• Healthy relationships, with an emphasis on gender inclusion and diversity

The bells of Cornell, referred to as the Cornell Chimes, are the heartbeat of campus life, marking the hours and chiming daily concerts. The original set of nine bells, a gift of Jennie McGraw, first rang out at the university's opening ceremonies October 7, 1868. Over time the chime has been recast and expanded to 21 bells. Three concerts are performed each day while classes are in session.

Cornell Cinema was established in 1970 as a university film society, but has evolved into a regional exhibition program with a national reputation. Its primary mission is educational: to expose audiences to a diverse range of cinematic experiences (classics, documentaries, experimental work, silent films, international cinema, shorts programs, alternative animation) that would otherwise not be offered in the area, and to supplement these with educational services that enhance viewers' appreciation of the art form (media maker presentations, faculty introductions, and panel discussions with experts on subject matter). The CWC provides support for individuals at any stage of the writing process. It is a free resource available to all of Cornell—undergraduate students, pre-freshman and high schoolers in summer programs, graduate students, staff, faculty, and alumni—for nearly any kind of writing project: applications, presentations, lab reports, essays, papers, and more. Tutors (trained undergraduate students) serve as responsive listeners and readers who can address questions about the writing process or about particular pieces of writing. German Studies at Cornell enables students to develop the linguistic, literary, and cultural competency required of world citizens in the twenty-first century. The interdisciplinary and cross-cultural orientation of our curriculum is designed to fulfill the needs of our diverse student population.
