Building inclusive research and designing supportive outreach and networking for growing talents

Outreach programs in STEM provide powerful opportunities for learning. For kids, these programs can cultivate life-long interests in STEM topics and even ignite the pursuit of STEM- related careers. However, communication and perceptual differences/disabilities make accessing community spaces and outreach materials inaccessible for many people. Furthermore, institutional opportunities to train STEM students in disability justice, accessibility and inclusive practices are rare.

This team’s goal is to bring Cornell STEM students, TST BOCES students and the Lab of Ornithology together to enhance their ability to communicate STEM-related content and improve the impact of outreach programs. Leveraging a shared interest in birds, the team is building lasting relationships across the community to support these goals.

The Cornell Chimes
The bells of Cornell, referred to as the Cornell Chimes, are the heartbeat of campus life, marking the hours and chiming daily concerts. The original set of nine bells, a gift of Jennie McGraw, first rang out at the university's opening ceremonies October 7, 1868. Over time the chime has been recast and expanded to 21 bells. Three concerts are performed each day while classes are in session.

Cornell Cinema is one of the leading campus film exhibition programs in the country and an integral part of the fabric of campus life at Cornell. The cinema presents more than 75 films each semester and features an eclectic mix of contemporary and classic titles from around the globe. Working in collaboration with partners across campus and beyond, Cornell Cinema seeks to spark conversation, inspire innovative thinking, and advance interdisciplinary teaching through collective encounters with the art of film.

The cinema operates four to five nights per week in the historic Willard Straight Theatre, which is centrally located on the campus of Cornell University and open to the general public. The organization is managed by four professional staff members and supported by a team of more than 25 students who coordinate all front-of-house operations.

Welcome to First-Generation & Low-Income (FGLI) Student Support Center! We promote awareness, identity exploration, community engagement, and self-advocacy for students who identify with the first-generation and/or low-income student experience.

At Cornell, we consider you a first-generation college student if you come from a family in which neither of your parents or guardians has obtained a four-year college degree in the U.S.

Although you may feel like you are alone in that experience, 19.9% of the students in the incoming class of 2026 identified as first-generation college students. Students with low-income status have little or no expected parent contribution as part of their financial aid package, are Pell Grant recipients, or have had their academic experience limited due to socioeconomic status. Note that they often intersect; first-generation and low-income are not synonymous.

German Studies at Cornell enables students to develop the linguistic, literary, and cultural competency required of world citizens in the twenty-first century. The interdisciplinary and cross-cultural orientation of our curriculum is designed to fulfill the needs of our diverse student population. We encourage students to choose from the broad range of courses we offer in collaboration with other units such as Government, Philosophy, History, Comparative Literature, Jewish Studies, and Performing and Media Arts.

Our curriculum is inspired by three core tenets:

The literary and visual arts are unique realms of thought and experimentation that constitute a source of knowledge in its own right.
Engagement with the distinct ways these domains have been investigated in the German intellectual tradition provides a crucial basis for critical reflection on society and culture.
The greatest insights that teachers and students produce arise in a dynamic environment that fosters cooperative learning, the pleasure of discovery, and rigorous intellectual mentoring.

Our courses emphasize close analysis of texts and artifacts, as sustained at all times by thoughtful reflection on the concepts that guide our investigations. We regard essay writing in both English and German as central to our core mission of teaching students to think critically and develop cogent, rhetorically effective arguments. Our curriculum closely integrates the study of language and culture at all levels of instruction. We regularly offer seminars on such topics as modern literature and aesthetics; space and architecture in fictional worlds; avant-garde movements and artistic perception; contemporary literature, globalization and migration; critical theory; the detective novel; politics and history on stage; homo oeconomicus; Marx, Nietzsche, Freud; political theory and cinema; psychoanalysis; web culture.

We warmly welcome and encourage students to pursue German Studies as a vibrant part of their general education, whether as a major or minor; as a double major alongside another discipline; in preparation for graduate school; or as a stepping stone to an international professional career. The Cornell University Graduate and Professional Student Assembly serves as an official voice for the the nearly 7,000 graduate and professional students at Cornell. In addition to representing the students in matters of university governance, the GPSA has the responsibility for setting and administering the Student Activity Fee for graduate and professional students.

The GPSA is a valuable component of graduate or professional education for those who hope to be affiliated with a university in the future. The GPSA regularly meets with the President and Provost, and it sends representatives to the Employee Assembly, the undergraduate Student Assembly, and the Faculty Senate. Involvement in the GPSA can provide valuable experience in the mechanics of shared governance in a university setting.

Every graduate and professional student at Cornell can have a voice in the GPSA, and we're working to encourage each other to speak up to make sure everybody is heard!
