Mission


Akwe:kon (pronounced uh-GWAY-go) opened its doors in 1991, making it the nation's first university residence hall established to celebrate American Indian culture and heritage. In the Mohawk language, Akwe:kon means "all of us," reflecting the spirit of inclusiveness the house offers to students and the broader community. Akwe:kon's 35 residents represent diverse cultures and backgrounds; roughly half are Native American. Whatever their cultural background or tribal nationality, residents share an interest in past and contemporary Native issues and the importance of community and extended family.

Situated on Cornell's north campus, Akwe:kon's distinctive building and landscape were designed with extensive input from Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people, incorporating symbols that reflect the theme of communal spirit. Akwe:kon's presence on campus goes beyond the beauty of its structure, and includes activities and events that provide its residents and the entire Cornell community with ways to experience aspects of American Indian cultures and traditions.

Throughout the year, Akwe:kon – in conjunction with the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program (AIISP)– sponsors activities and programs featuring art, dances, film screenings, lectures, music, traditional foods, workshops and much more. Events are open to the public, and enable the whole Cornell community to experience the spirit of Native cultures and traditions.

Eco House exists to further sustainability, animal welfare, plant cultivation and appreciation, ingenuity, environmental education, inclusivity, and community. We commit to having an enthusiastic atmosphere, educational programming, committees, and sustainable lifestyles. We will expand our impact through outreach, collaboration, and participation in the wider Cornell community as Eco representatives. In doing so, we will act as an environmental hub for campus.

The LLC has, and will continue to, build socially conscious and community-minded individuals. Our goals have been, and still are, t0 provide knowledge of our culture and the problems facing Latinxs so that the future leaders of our communities will be prepared with the skills and sensitivity necessary to effect social change.

The LLC has aimed to attract more Latinx students to Cornell University, thus enabling more students to complete academic programs. Through a philosophy of openness and inclusiveness, the LLC moved forward increasing student leadership and support, multicultural competency, and awareness of the spectrum of Latinx cultures.

By combining the values in the LLC Common Bond and H&RL Programmatic Learning Objectives they will ideally act as a guide for the actions and decisions of individuals as they interact with and support each other, as well as other communities on campus.

This extends to the both in and out of house members of the LLC and affiliated students, staff, and faculty. We are not just members of these communities, but representatives as well.

Welcome to the Mews Hall and Loving House: the LGBTQ+ Living Learning Unit community page!

Mews Hall is home to over 200 first-year students and Loving House consists of 30 students from all class years. Our community is located on North Campus, conveniently located next to the Appel Commons, Robert Purcell Community Center and the Helen Newman Gym.

The Mews community is committed to providing a high quality living learning experience that allows residents to learn about self and community through opportunities for engagement and leadership. The community is supported by a staff who is trained to help you get acclimated to the Cornell environment, provide ongoing support, and offer fun and educational programs throughout the academic year. Our staff includes 9 Resident Advisors (RAs), a Senior Resident Advisor (SRA) and a Residence Hall Director (RHD).

In addition to the many hall-wide programs we offer throughout the year, we have a Residence Hall Leadership Organization, supported through the Residential Student Congress (RSC), known as the Mews Community Council. Residents will have the opportunity to serve as representatives for their floors and overall Mews and Loving House Community as well as have the opportunity to run for executive positions within the council. We welcome you to going us in these and other amazing opportunities in Mews.

Ujamaa was founded as a result of the 1969 Willard Straight Hall Takeover, a student-led protest which addressed the University's mistreatment of Black students on Cornell's campus. Their demands were met and the Africana Studies and Research Center, the Africana Library and Ujamaa Residential College were all born. The term "Ujamaa" is Kiswahili, roughly meaning collective economics. The name affirms our commitment as a community to pool resources and be participants in each other's fulfillment.
