Building inclusive research and designing supportive outreach and networking for growing talents

Outreach programs in STEM provide powerful opportunities for learning. For kids, these programs can cultivate life-long interests in STEM topics and even ignite the pursuit of STEM- related careers. However, communication and perceptual differences/disabilities make accessing community spaces and outreach materials inaccessible for many people. Furthermore, institutional opportunities to train STEM students in disability justice, accessibility and inclusive practices are rare.

This team’s goal is to bring Cornell STEM students, TST BOCES students and the Lab of Ornithology together to enhance their ability to communicate STEM-related content and improve the impact of outreach programs. Leveraging a shared interest in birds, the team is building lasting relationships across the community to support these goals.

Akwe:kon (pronounced uh-GWAY-go) opened its doors in 1991, making it the nation's first university residence hall established to celebrate American Indian culture and heritage. In the Mohawk language, Akwe:kon means "all of us," reflecting the spirit of inclusiveness the house offers to students and the broader community. Akwe:kon's 35 residents represent diverse cultures and backgrounds; roughly half are Native American. Whatever their cultural background or tribal nationality, residents share an interest in past and contemporary Native issues and the importance of community and extended family.

Situated on Cornell's north campus, Akwe:kon's distinctive building and landscape were designed with extensive input from Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people, incorporating symbols that reflect the theme of communal spirit. Akwe:kon's presence on campus goes beyond the beauty of its structure, and includes activities and events that provide its residents and the entire Cornell community with ways to experience aspects of American Indian cultures and traditions.

Throughout the year, Akwe:kon – in conjunction with the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program (AIISP)– sponsors activities and programs featuring art, dances, film screenings, lectures, music, traditional foods, workshops and much more. Events are open to the public, and enable the whole Cornell community to experience the spirit of Native cultures and traditions.

Alpha Chi Omega was founded at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana on October 15, 1885. Its seven founders, who were all music students, sought "friendship, artistic society and advancement of the 'principles of true womanhood.'"
Today, Alpha Chi Omega has over 200,000 members nationally with over 135 collegiate chapters and 200 alumnae chapters.
The Zeta Phi chapter of Alpha Chi Omega was founded at Cornell in 1984 with 55 women. In the past thirty years, the Zeta Phi chapter has flourished from a small group of women meeting in classrooms to recognition as one of the strongest sororities on Cornell's campus - an organization in which academic excellence, community involvement, and leadership are exemplified through its 150 members. The Zeta Phi chapter is the oldest of the four Ivy League chapters of Alpha Chi Omega.

Our mission is to to inspire and support exemplary women dedicated to friendship and a lifelong commitment to Alpha Epsilon Phi while building on the vision of our Jewish founders. The Kappa Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority was founded on Cornell's campus in 1920. AEPhi's national motto is "Many Hearts, One Purpose", and this rings true here at Cornell. Our sisterhood is comprised of women with a wide range of backgrounds, interests and aspirations.
Our organization values scholarship, service and philanthropy, in addition to sisterhood and leadership development in each of our members. We pride ourselves on our diverse sisterhood and each sister's contribution to our chapter and the greater Cornell community.

The Beginnings of Alpha Gamma Rho start in 1912 with the foundation of the Caduceus chapter at Cornell University. The founders were a close knit group of men dedicated to issues concerning agriculture. On December 19, 1914, Caduceus received a charter from Alpha Gamma Rho national and has Zeta Chapter ever since. The first AGR house sat at 409 Dryden Ave until 1916 when a new house was built at 203 Highland Ave, the present location of the house. Since 1914, Alpha Gamma Rho has been the home to over 1700 men. Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) is the national agricultural fraternity, with sixty two chapters across the United States. AGR boasts a rich tradition of close brotherhood, good times, and prides itself on its reputation of being a friendly fraternity. For over seventy years, Cornell's Zeta chapter has been the home for over 1800 members who have gone on to become leaders in many diverse fields. We feel that AGR is a close knit group of individuals because many of our brothers are closely associated with agriculture, which allows us to form incredibly strong bonds of friendship unparalleled in many fraternity experiences. However, a surprising number of our brothers are not from agricultural backgrounds, which contributes to our amazing diversity. Brothers of Alpha Gamma Rho are also extremely busy with organizations outside of the house such as philanthropies and community service, varsity and intramural sports, as well as the Cornell Inter-fraternity Council. Whether it means holding social events, or just hanging out together, we form friendships that last forever. In a place as big as Cornell University, it's nice to have a place to call home, a place where we call each other brothers and friends, and a place that makes our college years some of the most rewarding years of our lives. For us, we call this place Alpha Gamma Rho.

Alpha Phi was the first American college sorority. It was founded at Syracuse University in 1872, where Alpha Chapter still exists. At its formation the sisterhood numbered ten women. One of these was Martha Foote Crowe, who later became Alpha Phi's first president. "Pursuing their studies in a thoroughly male-dominated environment, these women had a pressing need for friends who could sympathize with each other's problems and support each other's aspirations."(The Ivy Leaf) In addition, Alpha Phi organized the first interfraternity association, known today as the National Panhellenic Conference, in 1902 when they called the first successful inter-sorority meeting with Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, and Delta Delta Delta. Alpha Phi is now an international fraternity having over 140 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Alpha Phi has a membership of over 100,000 women and approximately 4,500 women pledge Alpha Phi every year. Objective/Aim of Sorority: At all times, it is our aim to consciously endeavor to promote the highest ideals of womanhood. In our effort to become more effective and contributing members of society, we shall strive for growth of character, intellectual development and excellence of scholarship, as well as to perfect our leadership capabilities. In all that we do, we shall encourage unity of feeling, sisterly affection, and social communion. We shall employ the principles of justice and right and give and receive mutual criticism in a spirit of love. As we search for truth and individual growth, we shall be mindful of our personal conduct. Our attitudes, beliefs and actions must in no way reflect a damaging influence on the image of our Chapter or Fraternity, or our sisters individually. We shall endeavor to represent the best in culture and refinement. We shall abide by the Constitution, Standing Rules and Collegiate Chapter Operations Manual of Alpha Phi International Fraternity. Cornell Chapter History: Delta Chapter's history begins with a visit by two Syracuse Alpha Phis in early 1889 for the purpose of beginning a chapter at Cornell. These visitors pledged four Cornell women who then pledged five more. In February 1889, Alpha initiated these nine women in a ceremony held at the Ithaca Hotel. Delta Chapter has been located in a number of places during its years of existence. First housed in Sage College, the chapter moved there in 1898. A house unit was tried from 1907-8 at 214 Eddy Street but failed as the sisters felt they lost interest in University affairs. The chapter remained in Sage College until 1917 when a shortage of housing forced University officials to request that organized groups find their own houses. Delta rented Alpha Zeta's house at 214 Thurston Ave. for the year 1917-8. 1918-1921 were spent at 114 Kelvin Place. In 1921, this house was sold necessitating a move. 411 Thurston, a house built by Amy Cooper Wurster (Alpha '91) was purchased and has remained the chapter house ever since. The original house, pictures of which may be seen in old Cornelians, was enlarged twice. Once in 1937, when the side wings were added and again in 1961, when the new wing was built.
Philanthropy: Since 1946, Alpha Phi has focused on heart disease and cardiac care as a philanthropic priority. Today, research into the diagnosis and treatment of women's heart disease in a special interest of the Alpha Phi Foundation. Gender differences in diagnosing and treating cardiac health problems are becoming widely recognized, and donors can make a difference for thousands of women through gifts to the Alpha Phi Foundation. The Foundation funds educational programming in the areas of alcohol and AIDS awareness, women's health and safety, and other Watch Care programs developed for Alpha Phi collegiate chapters. The Foundation also funds the educational training sessions at Convention and Leadership Conferences that help officers develop the skills necessary to assume strong leadership roles within their chapters, as well as in the future. Participants in Convention and Leadership Conferences learn new insights into building effective teams and improving relationships, which they, in turn, use to enhance their chapters. The Foundation also supports women in all stages of their education. Undergraduate and graduate scholarships are awarded to Alpha Phi collegians and alumnae every year. Nontraditional educational scholarships are also available to Alpha Phi women who need additional course work for certification, career advancement or to reenter the work force.

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the "Jewels" of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

Iota Chapter at Cornell was founded on March 27, 1909, by a group of ten undergraduates. The new fraternity prospered, and in 1913 it moved to its current location teetering over the edge of Fall Creek Gorge. The west wing containing 15 single rooms and the north wing, with expanded dining and social facilities, were added in 1924. Major improvements have been made to Rockledge Estate regularly. Alpha Sig has made and continues to make distinctive contributions to the Cornell community. Andrew Dickson White, the first president of and co-founder of Cornell, was initiated into the fraternity at Yale in 1850. He served as the fraternity's national president from 1913 to 1915 and helped found the chapter at Cornell. Other distinctive alumni include past and current deans of the Agriculture, Hotel, and Veterinary colleges at Cornell, and presidents of major corporate firms.

As one of the ten founding fraternities of the National Panhellenic Conference, it was Alpha Xi Delta's first NPC Chairman who wrote the Panhellenic Creed, which is still recited on college campuses today. In the past two years, APAA held discussions on revolutionaries and thinkers like Grace Lee Boggs as well as relevant issues in the AAPI community such as affirmative action, rising gun violence in the AAPI community, and Asian-American history. Big Red THON is an independent, registered non-profit organization and simultaneously Cornell's branch of the Children Miracle Network Hospitals Dance Marathon. We brought the Dance Marathon movement to the Ivy League in 2015, and have raised over $115,000 to date for the kids of Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse--our local CMN Hospital. Our yearly 10-hour Dance Marathon, typically held in Barton Hall, is a celebration of the fundraising and awareness campaigns we've held leading up to the main event. It is the purpose of The Black Women's Support Network to provide a supportive, educational, and social venue where women of African descent can discuss issues affecting and pertaining to their community. Support is consistently provided to these women by giving them ample access to all resources and tools needed to assist them in their academic, personal and social endeavors while at Cornell University. Items under this umbrella include, but are not limited to: academic workshops and development, sexual/mental/physical/emotional health assistance, and access to other supportive Black women through a variety of social events and initiatives such as the B.O.S.S. (Building Ourselves through Sisterhood and Service), a peer mentorship program for self-identified women of color. Moreover, the Black Women's Support Network aims to serve as a forum where women of color can share, reflect and gain knowledge from each other's experiences. BWSN seeks to accomplish this by providing engaging Sister Circle discussions on a regular basis throughout the year. Sister Circles are our unique form of General Body meetings which occur bi-weekly. - Brain Exercise Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on preventing memory loss through brain exercise.
- Pioneered by neuroscientist Dr. Ryuta Kawashima, it has been found that doing simple math and reading aloud for just 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week, caused marked improvements for those with Alzheimer's. Most showed improvements in cognitive function as tested by Mini Mental State Examinations (MMSE) and Frontal Assessment Batteries (FAB). Many began to feel happier and improvements in communication and cognition were recorded. Near miraculous case studies were also observed. For example, an individual who was previously bedridden began to walk again after completing these exercises for six months. Some patients showed improvements in bowel movement. The gentle mental activities Dr. Kawashima used activated the prefrontal cortex, the control center for memory, cognition and planning. These activities are currently being done in over 1400 care centers with over 15,000 patients in Japan. Drawing from the research conducted in Japan, we are inspired to create an intergenerational nonprofit in which university students would hold brain exercise programs at retirement homes. We creates daily packets which include simple math, writing and "read-alouds" that are completed by each individual with the guidance of university students. Several retirement homes have integrated the program into their center and chapters are currently being founded at different universities.

Not only does the Brain Exercise Initiative hope to improve the memory of those suffering from Alzheimer's but we also create an invaluable, all-too-rare avenue for intergenerational service, discussion, and collaboration.

BreakFree's mission is twofold!

Firstly, BreakFree Crew: We are a family of dancers who share creativity and encourage one another to be true to ourselves, while honing the dancing skills of our current team members. We originally choreograph our own dances to share with others who we are. Throughout the year, we perform at various events on campus. BreakFree crew's admission is through audition-only, and every year, we organize and headline a showcase in the spring that attracts hundreds of people. Our showcase is a chance for members to share their craft with friends and family, all the while providing us the chance to inspire the audience to break free!

Secondly, BreakFree Workshop: We, as a crew, offer free dance workshops to anyone on campus. We hold these workshops for the community to participate in multiple times every month, and participants can attend any workshop at their own leisure. Each class is taught by a different member of BreakFree. The desire to dance is universal, and we want to spread and share our own love for dance to the entire Cornell community!

Building Ourselves through Sisterhood and Service (B.O.S.S.) aims to foster healthy and genuine relationships between upperclassmen and underclassmen womxn of color, promote positive social interactions within womxn of color communities, encourage high academic and personal standards, provide access to helpful campus resources, and inspire community involvement and commitment to service. Incoming freshmen are paired with juniors. These pairs will stay together formally for 1 year. Although the program understands the importance of the year for growth and development, matches of sophomores and seniors can be made on a case-by-case basis. For example, a sophomore transfer student may be matched with a senior. We create a variety of programs throughout the year that encourage pairs to bond as well as serve the Cornell and Ithaca community.
