Founded during the Chicanx Movement, MEPA de Cornell will be moving past the mistakes and ignorance that was perpetuated in the early Chicanx movement and ingrained into the foundation of many Chicanx spaces. As we reconsider our positions both locally and globally, we aim to work towards a shared understanding of what the "Chicanx" and more broadly "Latinx" identity is truly composed of. Especially as we are underrepresented students at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI), it is essential for us to push towards inclusivity and empowerment of marginalized folk.
MEPA provides academic and personal support to students in the organization, enhances the community's awareness of Chicanx culture through educational, cultural and social programming, and promotes the continued education of Chicanx students. We are working towards a decolonial understanding of the "Chicanx" label. It transcends further than an identity; it is a philosophy, a mindset. "Chicanx" is inclusive of any person of any ethnicity or race. Although MEPA de Used used to caters to the Latinx community, the organization is open to anyone willing to liberate and empower the marginalized. We aim to celebrate our cultures and history but remain cognizant of the facts, stories, and voices that have yet to enter the mainstream conversations around what it means to be Chicanx.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our events will be more limited and less frequent than they were pre-COVID-19. However, keep an eye out! You never know when MEPA is around the corner ƒæÇ.
The privileges afforded to all MEPA members include the use of the newsletter, MEPA archives, and other available MEPA resources. Active undergraduate members will be able to vote on any issue presented to the general body. Active MEPA members will also be given priority to attend conferences supported by MEPA de Cornell.
MEPA members aim to keep in contact with past members and current ones! Our goal is to create community and to keep it going. MEPA membership lasts forever and our community will always be here to support you, whether in Ithaca or not!
"It is important to recognize the existence of Blackness in Latin America. Latin American narratives have been falsely constructed upon ideals of heritage made of only Spaniards and Indians."
