Hispanic Heritage Month

Starting September 15th, it will be Hispanic Heritage Month!

From September 15th to October 15th, each week we'll be sharing the stories of various influential Hispanic figures. If there is a particular individual you'd like to see included, please email RHD Cristina at cn345@cornell.edu.

Julia Alvarez

Dominican American writer Julia Alvarez, has been enchanting readers with her words since the early 1990s. She was born in New York City in 1950 before her family moved to the Dominican Republic when she was a baby. They stayed there throughout Alvarez’s childhood until her father’s involvement in a failed attempt to overthrow the militant dictator forced the family to flee to the United States in 1960. The traumatic event has since made its way into several of Alvarez’s works, including the poem “Exile” in which she recounts the night her family fled. She has become one of the most critically revered Latina writers and has published poems, novels and essays throughout her career.

Sylvia Rivera

A veteran of the 1969 Stonewall Inn uprising, Sylvia Rivera was a tireless advocate for those silenced and disregarded by larger movements. Throughout her life, she fought against the exclusion of transgender people, especially transgender people of color, from the larger movement for gay rights. In 1963, Rivera met Marsha P. Johnson and it changed her life. Johnson, an African American self-identified drag queen and activist, was also battling exclusion in a movement for gay rights that did not embrace her gender expression. The two were actively involved in the Stonewall Inn uprising on June 28, 1969 when patrons of the Stonewall Inn—a gay bar in Greenwich Village in lower Manhattan—rebuffed a police raid and set a new tone for the gay rights movement. For six nights, the 17-year-old Rivera refused to go home or to sleep, saying “I’m not missing a minute of this—it's the revolution!”

Juan Felipe Herrera

Juan Felipe Herrera was the 21st United States Poet Laureate from 2015-2017—the first Latino to be appointed to the post. The son of migrant farm workers in California, Herrera’s was a nomadic childhood. His mother recited poetry and taught him songs from the Mexican Revolution. Inspired by her spirit, he has spent his life, as The Washington Post put it, “crossing borders, erasing boundaries and expanding the American chorus.” Herrera’s political activism dates back to his college efforts to bring visibility to Mexican- Americans, and their stories and histories, as a member of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement. He continues his work as a performance artist and activist on behalf of migrant and indigenous communities and at-risk youth.

Community Living Standards reminders -

If you have guests visiting, please escort them to use the public bathrooms in the lobby area by the water filtration station. This is respectful of your peers in the community and helps to reserve use of the bathrooms in residential portions of the building for residents.

One of the best things about living on campus is the opportunity to live in a community with your peers and experience autonomy in your own space. With that autonomy comes learning what it means to live with new people!

When it comes to the lounges and common areas:

  • Community entrance doors must be closed immediately upon entering the building.

    • All card access entrances must not be propped open at any time.

  • For the safety of the entire building, we must pay close attention to anyone who may be following us into the building.

    • Residents are not allowed to follow them into the building and are not allowed to enable unapproved solicitations.

  • If you use the vacuums from the lounges, please return them to the same location.

    • Each vacuum has a location written on them.

  • Please do not put any of the common space furniture in your rooms. Additionally, please do not move it out the lounge either.

  • After using a lounge or common space, please return all the furniture back to its original state.

  • All flyers must be taken to the Housing & Residential Life Office at 1501 Clara Dickson Hall for approval before they are posted.

    • Please know that any unapproved flyers will/have been taken down. After flyers are approved, RHD Cristina and/or our RAs will post them.

When it comes to the community kitchens:

  • If you are using the stove or oven, please do not leave anything unattended!

    • Please also use the vent in the kitchen to help with air circulation and prevent the fire alarm from going off.

  • Don't leave dishes or food out, in the sink, or on the stove/countertop. If items are left out, then our Building Care Team cannot clean the area.
  • The fridge in the main lobby is reserved for programming.
    • Please use the others located in Lounges 347, 302, 247, 202, and 147.
  • Do not use/take food products that are not your own without prior approval of the owner. Also, don't assume that something is up for grabs just because it doesn't have a label on it.
  • Regularly discard expired products or items that have gone bad.
  • Do not throw room trash in lounge/kitchen trash bins. Please use the trash rooms.
  • Dining dishes are not supposed to be taken out of the dining hall. However, if you happen to find some, please return and avoid putting them in the community kitchens.
  • If you notice a leak, drain issues or other maintenance concerns, please submit a service request.

When it comes to the laundry room, be sure to:

  • Retrieve items in a timely manner so another resident can use the washer/dryer.

  • Set alarms and reminders on your phone to indicate that the machine cycle is complete, so others can also remove clothes in a timely fashion.

  • Be mindful of others who may need to also do laundry.
  • You may have noticed the noticed the chairs with the small tables in the laundry room, you are welcomed to wait for your laundry in the space and bring your laptop/devices to do homework/study as you wait.
  • Please be respectful of others' belongings.

With these in mind, this will allow you to monitor your belongings and be mindful of the needs of our community.

As a reminder, every night, our RAs complete community walks to engage with our community and ensure safety. Know that they will knock on bathrooms as they complete their walks and enter all bathroom spaces. Please do not be alarmed. All we ask is that you respond when you hear a knock. Our RAs will enter each bathroom to check for safety and security concerns and facilities issues that may need attention.

Community Hours

Roommate Agreements:

Roommate Agreements are available online through the Housing & Dining Portal. If you're living in a double, you're strongly encouraged to complete this form together with your roommate to help set shared expectations and avoid future misunderstandings.

Even if you don’t live in a double, it’s still important to be mindful of how you use shared community spaces—respect and communication go a long way!

How to Access the Roommate Agreement

  1. Log into the Housing & Dining Portal using your Cornell student credentials.
  2. From the menu, select “Roommate Agreement.
    1. (Optional) Refer to the image below for visual guidance.

Completing the Agreement:

  • One roommate should initiate the form on StarRez. You can work on it together in real time or take turns.
  • Once completed, the initiating roommate should submit the form.
  • The form will then be sent to the other roommate(s) for review.
  • The reviewing roommate(s) should:
    • Confirm that all responses were accurately captured.
    • If everything looks good, submit the form.
    • If edits are needed, they can make changes and resubmit the form.
  • The updated form will be sent back for final review to ensure mutual agreement.

This process ensures that all roommates are on the same page and have had a chance to contribute to the agreement.
