Spaces of violence: Migrating in Search of Safety

This presentation analyzes the violence that women and sexual minorities face in the Northern Triangle countries of Central America—violence that compels them to leave their homes and seek sanctuary in
the U.S. Their journeys north are also marked by violence, as is the crossing of the U.S.-Mexico border. Once having arrived in the U.S., refugees often encounter abuse and mistreatment in immigration
detention centers. We examine the particular conditions shaping these journeys and the possibilities for agency within these spaces. We also ask how North American activists can help create safe spaces for these refugees, drawing on our work in the Cornell Anti-Detention Alliance.
