About Us
Compass at Cornell is a student-led organization committed to building bridges between Cornell University and the George Junior Republic High School (GJR). In partnership with the Einhorn Center for Community Engagement, we design and lead after-school programs that foster creativity, leadership, and connection among GJR students.
Our work is rooted in the belief that community engagement should be reciprocal—a relationship where Cornell students not only share resources and mentorship, but also learn from the lived experiences, insights, and creativity of the youth we serve.
Through clubs like Arts & Crafts, Cooking & Baking, and Movement, we create spaces that empower GJR students to explore their interests, develop confidence, and express themselves. Compass members reflect critically on what it means to engage ethically and sustainably beyond Cornell's campus, deepening their understanding of the social systems—such as race, class, gender, and ability—that shape opportunity and access.
Ultimately, Compass exists to reimagine community partnership—not as service, but as collaboration. We strive to cultivate mutual growth, amplify student voices, and make engagement a shared journey toward learning, equity, and belonging.
