THE DONLON JOURNAL -- November 7 2022

Cornell University is located on the traditional homelands of the Gayogo╠▒hó:ný╔ü (the Cayuga Nation). The Gayogo╠▒hó:ný╔ü are members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, an alliance of six sovereign Nations with a historic and contemporary presence on this land. The Confederacy precedes the establishment of Cornell University, New York state, and the United States of America. We acknowledge the painful history of Gayogo╠▒hó:ný╔ü dispossession, and honor the ongoing connection of Gayogo╠▒hó:ný╔ü people, past and present, to these lands and waters.

This land acknowledgment has been reviewed and approved by the traditional Gayogo╠▒hó:ný╔ü leadership.

In addition to the Gayogo╠▒hó:ný╔ü land acknowledgment but separate from it, the AIISP faculty would like to emphasize: Cornell's founding was enabled in the course of a national genocide by the sale of almost one million acres of stolen Indian land under the Morrill Act of 1862. To date the university has neither officially acknowledged its complicity in this theft nor has it offered any form of restitution to the hundreds of Native communities impacted. For additional information, see the Cornell University and Indigenous Dispossession website here.

You can also find me on D5 with my door open if I’m in there.

SLOPE DAY SURVEY

Take the Slope Day survey! The purpose of this survey is for Cornell’s student body to let the Slope Day Programming Board know their thoughts about previous Slope Day artists and who they would like to see this year. The survey will open at noon on Thursday, October 27, 2022, and close EOD on Thursday, November 10, 2022. Please note that this is a general list of artists in no particular order, and there is no guarantee that any of these artists will/will not appear at Slope Day. However, your responses will help us in our decision-making process. If you are unfamiliar with an artist, we encourage you to look them up and listen to some of their music!

You can use this playlist to listen to the artists on this survey:.

The survey is linked here!

Election Night Watch Party

Join Dr. Sarah Kreps, Mews Faculty Fellow,  the John L. Wetherill Professor in the Department of Government, Adjunct Professor of Law, and the Director of the Cornell Tech Policy Institute at Cornell University for a dialogue around the US Midterm Election results.

The US Midterm Elections are this Tuesday, November 8. All 435 members of Congress are up for re-election and one-third of the Senate. Pollsters are predicting tight races even in areas that are not usually close. What factors are shaping this year's midterm politics? What are the likely effects of big political shifts in the midterm elections? We'll discuss those questions and more!

Food and refreshments will be provided! Reach out to Taylor Bouraad (tb533@cornell.edu) for any accommodations you may need.

HAPPENINGS AROUND CAMPUS

Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil
This month, we celebrate Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR). Started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998, TDoR happens annually on November 20th. Please join the LGBT RC and Ithaca College for LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services to acknowledge and remember those who are loved and missed at our annual vigil on November 17, 2022, at 7:00 PM. The event will take place live at the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca and will be live-streamed on Zoom. See below for more details or RSVP here.
-------------------------------------------

The Inclusive Excellence Academy invites you to take a “Break and Learn” in November by attending:

A Deeper Understanding of the Indigenous Experience

A Conversation with Wahienhawi “Hawi” Hall, CAPS Therapist and Community Liaison for Indigenous Students

Facilitated by Erin Sember-Chase, DEI Learning Consultant, Dept. of Inclusion & Belonging

Presented via Zoom (with captions); Zoom Link will be sent to registrants 24 hours prior to the event.

It’s Indigenous Heritage Month and Cornell’s Ithaca campus is located on the traditional homelands of the Gayogo╠▒hó:ný' (the Cayuga Nation), and has many historic ties to North American Indigenous Nations and communities. While this significant relationship is honored through land acknowledgements, it also compels us to amplify the voices, history, and lived experiences of our Native and indigenous identifying staff, faculty, and students.  In this conversation, Wahienhawi will share her knowledge, insights, and experiences from growing up immersed in her Onkwehonwe (“the Original People”) culture and working in spaces with Indigenous communities.  Take a break to join Hawi, Erin, and your colleagues to learn more about indigenous heritage and communities!

There will be two different opportunities to attend this virtual Break and Learn session-

Thursday November 17th from 12:00 – 1:00pm ET

Tuesday November 29th from 2:00-3:00pm ET

This session will not be recorded for post program dissemination.   Please register here: Link to Register
