Capoeira at Cornell University

"Capoeira Angola Quintal" is a registered student organization of Cornell University. It is a separate entity from the local community practice called the "Ithaca Capoeira Center" (the host of this website), although both practice Mindful Capoeira. “Angola Quintal” means the “Quintal” variation of the “Angola” style of Capoeira.

Cornell students have free access to ALL Ithaca-area Capoeira Angola Quintal practices. Any capoeira activities held on Cornell University campus are managed by the registered student organization of Cornell University. Practices available to Cornell students are held at the following times and locations:

Spring 2024:

Thursdays: 7pm - 8:30pm, at Willard Straight Hall (North Room)

Sundays: 5pm - 7pm, at Southside Community Center (enter at side door)

(Check our calendar for cancellations, etc.)

Classes with Capoeira Angola Quintal are...

  • Beginner-friendly

  • Inclusive & supportive

  • Great exercise

  • Culturally rich

  • Detailed & comprehensive

Each class begins with music and inspiration, moves into a warm-up and exercises to learn and condition ourselves for the basics of capoeira, and concludes with a core lesson for the day: practicing combinations of movements with a partner, learning more advanced/detailed movements, and playing games (jogos) of capoeira.

All ability levels are welcome. Our teachers and students are here to support; not to push anyone beyond their limit.

What to Expect:

  • We will be mindful of your time, beginning and ending class on schedule.

  • Our teachers and members will be welcoming and respectful.

  • Capoeira is a great workout-- you may wish to bring a water bottle and towel.

  • Workout-appropriate clothing will be a wise choice.

  • We recommend going barefoot for practice. Proper hygiene is appreciated by all.

  • We will move, participate in music, and have fun for the full duration of class.
