Subject: Townhouse Times First Edition

Welcome Home!

We are so excited that you are part of the Townhouse Community this academic year. As you gear up for the second week of classes, here is an intro of our team and some reminders as you transition to the community.

Throughout the semester, our Residence Hall Director (RHD), Mia Verdugo, will send out our weekly newsletter, the "The Townhouse Times". This will include a variety of information related to campus and the community. This first edition of the "The Townhouse Times" is all about our team. The main feature this week will be our awesome Resident Advisors (RAs) and RHD! Take a few minutes and learn more about who they are and what they're about! Be sure to say "Hi!" when you see them in the building!

A little about what our RAs are and do. They live in the undergraduate residence halls on campus and act as community leaders and peer educators, encouraging residents to respect one another and get involved with floor, hall and area activities, and providing information about campus resources. Our RAs also support the safety and security of our community by serving on-call each night. For more information: Resident Advisor Positions | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University

Residence Hall Director (RHD) – A1

My name is Mia Verdugo and I’m originally from San Diego, California. In this role, I support our upper-level students and they transition from their first year at Cornell or gear up for their last year and start thinking of life after Cornell–whether that’s through one-on-one conversations, community programming, or collaborating with our Student Leader team.

Before coming to Cornell, I earned my Master’s in Higher Education at Syracuse University. During grad school I got to work in various university departments including Academic and Career Advising, Athletics, Campus Activities, and Admissions–which opened my eyes to all the different ways to support students.

Outside of work, I enjoy going to concerts (currently at 15+ and 1 music festival), thrifting, nail art, cooking, and baking. If you see me around campus, feel free to say hi–I’m always up for a good convo!

Reminders

If you’re running low on toilet paper or trash bags, you can restock on the 2nd floor of the Community Center in the cubbies and near the old mailboxes.

We also have vacuums available to check out! You can contact the RA on-call who will be happy to lend you one, you’ll just have to leave your student ID while using it and can pick it up when you return the vacuum.

Please throw away your trash in the trash cans located outside the buildings, the large dumpsters, or in your apartment. We’ve noticed aluminium cans scattered outside the Townhouses. To be courteous to both the residents and building care staff, throwing trash away properly is appreciated.

Please do not leave things (tables, furniture, bikes, etc) outside of your apartment. If you own a bike, feel free to store them in the bike racks around the perimeters of the Townhouses.

This might sound obvious, but please lock your apartment doors! Since the Townhouses do not require key cards to enter the community, locking your doors ensures a layer of safety for you and your roommates. When service requests are completed, facilities staff will enter and lock the door when they leave, so save you and your roommates a lockout by locking your doors.

Townhouse Treats

As part of our weekly newsletters, I’ll be introducing “Townhouse Treats”--weekly recipes that you can try out in your own kitchen. The recipes will range from quick syrups to add to your morning bevs to dinners that you can make for you and your roommates if you’re feeling nice. When creating recipes, I’ve tried to make it easy to interchange or remove ingredients for any dietary restrictions. I hope you get to try them out!

Our first “Treat” is a brown sugar syrup which you might already have all the ingredients lying around to make for tomorrow's coffee. I personally like adding it to my espresso over ice, a splash of oat milk, and extra cinnamon.

Townhouse Hall Council Information

This Thursday, September 4th from 4-5pm, RHD Mia will be holding an information session on Zoom to talk about Hall Council!

As you learned at your floor meetings with your RAs, Hall Council is essentially the student council for the Townhouses! Similar to the student council, Hall Council plans programs for the community and advocates for the needs of the residents in the Townhouses. It is an amazing leadership opportunity to have early in your college career, and it is also a great way to become involved with the Townhouse community!

If you are interested, or even if you think you might be interested, drop in and let's chat! It will be an informational meeting, where we will discuss more about what Hall Council does and how you can get involved. If you cannot attend the meeting, feel free to contact me or your RAs if you have any questions.

I hope to see a few of you there!
