Let’s Talk About Community Door Handles

This past week, we’ve noticed that two community door handles have come loose. To help prevent further damage, please be mindful of how much force you’re using when opening hallway, exterior, and fridge doors:

When entering through an exterior door, always tap your card to gain access before pulling the door open. This helps protect the integrity of the door hardware and ensures proper access control.

As you continue building connections and friendships, please remember to follow our guest policies. Only residents and their guests should be entering the building. It might feel awkward to ask someone at the door if they live here, but doing so helps prevent “piggybacking”—when someone waits outside and follows another person in without tapping their own card.

If you’re hosting guests, you are responsible for their behavior and actions. Guests should remain with their host resident at all times while in the community.

If you notice any facilities concerns, please submit a service request or reach out to me or your RA directly.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe and well-maintained!

Fire Drill Follow Up

Each semester, we conduct unannounced fire drills in partnership with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), as required by the City of Ithaca and New York State. These drills help ensure everyone knows how to safely evacuate in case of a real emergency.

During any fire alarm—drill or not—everyone must:

  • Exit the building immediately.
  • Follow instructions from residential and emergency staff.
  • Stay outside until given permission to re-enter.

Failure to evacuate during a fire alarm will result in a conduct referral, as outlined in the Cornell Community Living Standards and Student Code of Conduct.

Thank you for your continued commitment to safety!

Community Living Standards reminders -

Our facilities and building care team are noticing a couple of Community Living Standards issues so I wanted to share some reminders. It you haven't already, please make sure that have looked over the Community Living Standards page. The concerns of late include -

Items begin stored in the pod bathrooms and hallways.

When items (such as bathmats, shelves, towels, personal, hygiene items) are left in bathroom, building care is not able to clean the space. Similarly, items left in the hallways poses a egress issue and prevent our Building Care team from properly cleaning and maintain out community.

Please be sure to look over your space and address any outstanding violations you may have.

Every night, our RAs complete community walks to engage with our community and ensure safety. Know that they will knock on bathrooms as they complete their walks and enter all bathroom spaces. Please do not be alarmed. All we ask is that you respond when you hear a knock. Our RAs will enter each bathroom to check for safety and security concerns and facilities issues that may need attention.

About our Trash Chutes:

With our Trash Rooms open, it is important to note that Barbara McClintock has 3 Trash Rooms in the Community. There is one trash room on each floor. There are located on the beginning of each floor toward the Appel Entrance. Our trash rooms have a trash chute and recycling:
  • Only bagged trash can go down the trash chute. When using the chute, please press the "ready" button and turn the lever to send trash down the chute. Please make sure the chute is closed properly to allow others to use it as well. You will know when it is closed correctly when you see the green light.
  • When taking out recycling, please read the signage of what can be recycled. Also, large items and boxes must be flattened before going into the blue bins.

Community Fridge Cleaning in McClintock Hall

As a reminder, the fridges in McClintock’s community kitchens will be cleaned during the week of September 8th to 12th on the following schedule:

  • Tuesday, Sept 9 – 3rd Floor
  • Wednesday, Sept 10 – 2nd Floor
  • Thursday, Sept 11 – 1st Floor

Please remove all items from your floor’s fridge before 7:00 AM on your designated day. Anything left inside during cleaning will be discarded. Fridges will be available for use again later that day once cleaning is complete.

Thanks for helping us keep our shared spaces fresh and functional!

Roommate Agreements

What is a 'Roommate Agreement'? The purpose of a roommate agreement is to promote discussion and to provide roommates with the opportunity to reflect on their needs, develop and practice communication, and reflect on the needs of everyone in the space. This is a collaborative process. RAs are able to utilize the Roommate Agreements when assisting with roommate mediation. If roommates have not completed the roommate agreement and are in conflict, the roommate agreement serves as a tool to assist roommates in discussing their expectations of their rooming experience and articulating their needs with one another. Roommates are not limited to the questions included in the agreement. The agreement is a foundation for a conversation!  How do I find the 'Roommate Agreement'? Roommate agreements are electronic and located within StarRez and found through the Housing Portal (as a tab). One roommate will need to initiate the form on StarRez to capture responses (roommates can work on this when they come together). This roommate will then submit the completed form and the form will then be sent to the other roommate(s). The other roommate(s) should then review to ensure everything was accurately captured. If everything is accurate and they agree on the content, they should then submit the form. If anything was missed and an edit needs to be made, the resident can make edits. Once the edits have been made, the form will be sent back to the other resident(s) for their review. This is to ensure that everyone is aware of and agrees to the documented information.   Once we make the 'Roommate Agreement'... then what?? Part of the living experience is also recognizing that needs evolve and as they do, mistakes happen/agreed upon expectations are not met. It is important to remember that this agreement is a living document and can be revisited at any time! Can my RA help us with our 'Roommate Agreement'? Yes! Please reachout to an RA for support with completing your roommate agreement, or locating the agreement on StarRez! RHDs are also available to assist with skill building and facilitating mediations.
