This presentation analyzes the violence that women and sexual minorities face in the Northern Triangle countries of Central America—violence that compels them to leave their homes and seek sanctuary in
the U.S. Their journeys north are also marked by violence, as is the crossing of the U.S.-Mexico border. Once having arrived in the U.S., refugees often encounter abuse and mistreatment in immigration
detention centers. We examine the particular conditions shaping these journeys and the possibilities for agency within these spaces. We also ask how North American activists can help create safe spaces for these refugees, drawing on our work in the Cornell Anti-Detention Alliance.
5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
A conversation with LGBTQ+ Advocates from Black and Pink
5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Many formal sex education classes have historically been gendered, binary, and heteronormative. This program seeks to reframe important sexual health conversations to be intentionally inclusive of gender and sexuality, while also providing medically accurate information about sexual health.
8:00 PM – 9:00 PM
For LGBTQ+ victims and survivors, this space will have two parts: open discussion on self-care, queer spaces, and relationships; and a queer futures building exercise.
5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
The 2019 Campus Climate Survey showed that when victims and survivors at Cornell ask for help, they go to friends first most often. Join Consent Ed in a presentation and discussion on how to respond to a disclosure and what local resources are available.
