Making Sound Futures, conceived by Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri in collaboration with Tacet(i) Ensemble, reimagines the musical instrument as a living, evolving entity rather than a fixed and perfected object. The project asks: Can an instrument continue to grow—physically, materially, and socially—after it has been made? Using sonic “recipes,” performers construct prototypical instruments from edible and impermanent materials such as rice paper, ice, wax, and herbs, alongside simple mechanical systems. These fragile structures melt, crack, sag, and transform over time, making material change an integral part of the composition. Sound emerges from instability, and performers negotiate in real time with objects that resist control. The instrument becomes a collaborator with its own temporal logic.
