The Garifuna Collective presents a participatory drumming workshop. Originally from Dangriga, Denmark “Fashion” Flores is a cultural musical icon for the Garifuna community in Belize. A master drummer with over 27 years of performance experience, Denmark has performed and toured with the Ugandani Dance Company, Sound City Band, Belize National Dance Company, Punta Rebels Band, the Garifuna All Star band and the Garifuna Collective, founded by the great Andy Palacio.

Denmark Flores will give a brief introduction to the history of the Garifuna culture and talk about the role of the primero and the segundo drums. They will then demonstrate the different hand positions used, and some of the main beats used in various musical practices. This will include a discussion of and demonstration of the Paranda rhythms, and introduce the Punta rhythms through further discussion and demonstration.

Tickets are available for the Garifuna Collective performance the following evening (Feb 6) in Bailey Hall at cornellconcertseries.com.
