Slope Day is Coming!

It’s that time of year again! Slope Day will soon be upon us and we hope you are as excited as we are. There is a long history of a springtime gathering at Cornell University and while this event has taken many shapes over the past century, one common thread persists: celebration. Today, the event we affectionately call "Slope Day" is a proud century-long tradition as a year-end gathering and celebration of the Cornell Community.

To promote safety and security during Slope Day, the Housing & Residential Life team will be available for support within the community. Please read below for important information and essential tips for having the best Slope Day possible:

  • On-Call Contact: Resident Advisors (RAs) will be On-Call and available to support you starting at 7:00AM on May 8 until 8:00AM on May 9. The RA On-Call phone number is 607-327-1735. We recommend saving this number in your contacts.
  • RA Support: RAs will be walking through the community throughout the day to support people in need. RAs-on-call will be wearing Housing & Residential Life apparel.
    • As members of a caring community, it's important we look out for one another's safety. If you're concerned about someone's health or safety because of Alcohol and Other Drug use, act promptly: Call 911 (or flag down a volunteer if you're on the Slope) so the person can get medical care, as AOD emergencies can be fatal. Signs of an AOD emergency can include someone who has passed out or is unresponsive, feeling high, or vomiting while passed out. Cornell and NY State have Good Samaritan protocols/laws in place to protect, from judicial and legal consequences, those who call for help – and those who receive help – in an alcohol- or drug-related emergency.
    • As you're making your plans for Slope Day, consider the rules and policies related to alcohol and other drug use at Cornell and make a plan that works for all. Consider having breakfast together in the dining halls or joining the Slope Day Break Fest outside of the Schwartz Center before heading over to the Slope. If you're 21+, you can purchase a beer bracelet at the ID tent with a credit card and government-issued ID, and enjoy the other options, open to all, throughout the event. Don't let alcohol or other drugs ruin your celebration. If you choose to drink, here are some tips: Skip the pre-game to reduce mid-day burnout, stay hydrated and well fed throughout the day, pace and limit the number of alcoholic drinks you consume and consider avoiding hard alcohol, which is the cause of nearly all alcohol emergencies.
    • Cornell’s Student Code of Conduct and Community Living Standards apply every day of the year and will continue during Slope Day.
    • Underage drinking, providing alcohol to minors, drinking in public spaces (lounges, community kitchens, hallways, or with your room door open), underage individuals in the presence of alcohol within the residence halls.
    • Cannabis in any form is not permitted on University property.
    • Watch the forecast, dress accordingly, and wear comfortable shoes. You can bring a clear, transparent bag to carry the essentials (i.e., phone, Cornell ID, pre-purchased food tickets, and an empty clear translucent water bottle). Additional supplies, like water, sunscreen and first aid items, will be available inside the gates and at the first aid tent.

Along with these tips, there are several rules for attending Slope Day that should be followed. These can be found on Slope Day’s website and are repeated here:

Slope Day Rules

Attendees

  • Attendance at Slope Day and related events is limited to current Cornell students, as well as full-time faculty and staff. Cornell alumni from December 2023 and earlier are also invited to participate in Slope Day. There are no exceptions for outside guests.
  • All attendees must receive a wristband prior to entering Slope Day.
  •

Outside Food and Beverage

  • Do not bring food or drinks: Outside food or drink are not permitted within Slope Day, including alcohol. A special Slope Day menu including food and drinks are available for purchase provided by Cornell Dining. Free food and beverages are also available in Slope Fest.
  • Plan now to fuel your Slope Day and enjoy the music! Pre-purchase your food tickets online or in dining halls [May 5-7] so you can enjoy all the fun foods without spending unnecessary time in lines. On May 8, sleep in and enjoy a special breakfast in your dining hall before you head over to the Slope. Bring an empty, translucent, non-glass water bottle with you to rehydrate early and often.
  • Water bottles: You can bring an EMPTY and CLEAR/TRANSPARENT water bottle to the Slope. You will be asked to dump any liquids at the gates (like at an airport!). You CANNOT bring a glass container. There are water hydration stations within Slope Day where you can refill your reusable water bottle. Additionally, everyone will be offered a free water bottle as they enter Slope Day from one of the gates.
  • No open containers: Open containers of alcohol are prohibited outside the gates. For those who are 21+, beer service is available at Slope Day within the gate.
  • No cash on the Slope: Plan ahead. You can purchase alcohol and food online and in-person prior to and on Slope Day. For those who are 21+, you can purchase a beer bracelet online prior to and on Slope Day. To purchase a beer bracelet, you need a government-issued ID which will be checked at the Slope).

Entrance:

  • All attendees are subject to search: Travel light to reduce wait times at gates. Leave backpacks, bags, purses, and other larger bags and items at home.
  • ONLY Clear/transparent bags are allowed. The maximum size allowed is 8 inches x 8 inches. Think: drawstring, shoulder bag, fanny pack. They will be searched.

With this information from Housing & Residential Life, these tips for staying safe during the day, and rules from the Slope Day Programming Board, we hope you have the best Slope Day possible! If you have any further questions or concerns regarding Slope Day, please reach out to tf265@cornell.edu.

End-of-Semester Tips

Stay organized and keep stress in check to finish the semester strong! Check out study and time management tips from the Learning Strategies Center. Be sure to build in time for self-care: aim to sleep 7-8 hours a night; eat well and get some exercise; and connect with others. If you’re feeling stressed, drop in to a Let’s Meditate session, or try 5-minute stress-busters. Find more tips on Cornell Health’s website, and visit Cornell’s Mental Health website if you need support.
