Hello,
Cornell must comply with city/state/national fire code regulations. In order to comply with those regulations, the University must complete fire safety inspections of all Cornell buildings including all residential communities/halls at specific times of the year that are mandated by Ithaca and New York State.
Fire safety inspections will be occurring on Thursday, March 2, 2023.
In order to help you prepare for these fire safety inspections please review the following attached files:
-
The “Top 10” cited violations
-
A Pre-inspection Checklist
Facilities staff, a Residence Hall Director/Area Coordinator, and the State Fire Inspector will conduct the inspections. All rooms may be entered as part of this inspection process.
-
All rooms will be locked after the inspection - be sure to have your keys with you to avoid getting locked out.
-
Ensure that the floor area in your suite/room is free of personal items so that the team can easily enter and walk through for the inspection – NOTE: too many items on the floor is a violation of rules regarding egress.
-
You will be cited for any violations found in your room/suite during the inspections, and you may be subject to a $50 fine and/or conduct action.
AVOID A $50 FINE – REMOVE THESE ITEMS! (Note, this is NOT an exhaustive list of possible violations). Please look at the House Rules for more information on items that are not allowed in rooms
-
CANDLES, EXTENSION CORDS and BED RISERS w/ OUTLETS are prohibited (power strips must have an on/off button/switch).
-
TAPESTRIES, FLAGS and DRAPES, SPORTS JERSEY’s (without flame retardant certification on file and posted in the room) are prohibited.
-
Too much paper on the wall (no more than 10% of the wall can be covered).
-
DECORATIONS MADE FROM DRIED PLANTS (any type of dried plant material is prohibited).
-
Battery-powered vehicles (e-bikes, scooter, hoverboards) are prohibited to store or charge in student rooms
To ensure we minimize the potential for violations, please review all areas for the following:
-
All Power Strips must be UL and FM Approved with these markings visible on the unit.
-
All combustible materials must be permanently disposed of.
-
Ensure bed risers do not have outlets in them (these are not UL approved for use).
-
Power Strips shall only support the electrical needs for Portable Equipment and shall not take the place of permanent wiring or outlets.
-
Remove all wall hangings / curtains/flags.
-
Remove anything hung from or covering sprinkler lines, smoke detectors or sprinkler heads. This poses a risk of damaging these pipes and causing flooding within your room.
You will be cited, and potentially fined $50, for any violations found during these inspections.
If found, prohibited items will be removed immediately, if possible, but if not possible, you will receive communication with a timeline for removing the violation. You may not be able to reclaim confiscated until the end of the semester. Check the House Rules for details regarding prohibited items.
Please reach out to your RA or respond to this email with any follow up questions.
All the best,
RHD Troy
