Students will evaluate beef cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats from both a phenotypic and genotypic
standpoint to determine the potential productivity and value of livestock within their respective
segments of the industry. Students will understand how different physical traits are prioritized
based on the function of each species and sex class, including how value is determined from
meat and carcass evaluation. Pedigree and other genetic data will also be analyzed to accompany
live evaluation and infer the potential merit of individual livestock as pieces in a breeding
system. Lastly, students will also create and deliver oral reasons to support and validate their
evaluation of livestock.

Understanding and conserving tropical species, ecosystems, landscapes and biodiversity is a major challenge facing society today. Furthermore, anthropogenic effects on the tropics and the human factors (social, cultural, political, and economic) driving such effects, add enormous complexity to such an urgent task. In all, tropical biology and conservation involves complex and coupled ecological and social systems. Therefore, in affiliation with the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation, Cornell's Tropical Biology and Conservation – Graduate Student Association (TBC-GSA) brings together graduate students and early career scientists across campus to share their research and efforts, while promoting the links between ecological and social dimensions for conserving tropical biodiversity. Interests of TBC-GSA cover a wide array of basic and applied research topics on tropical biology and conservation, including: structure, dynamics and functioning of tropical ecosystems, anthropogenic effects on tropical biodiversity and ecosystems, social-cultural and political-economic drivers of such effects, and more.

AASRP is a club devoted to teaching students of all interests about the care of goats, sheep, llamas, and alpacas. The first Pet Loss Support Hotline was set up in 1989 at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California at Davis. Cornell used their guidelines in construction of our own hotline. The hotline is staffed by volunteer veterinary students who have undergone extensive training with professional grief counselors. Volunteers regularly attend discussion meetings with faculty advisors. These meetings assist hotline volunteers in dealing with the personal responses to grief and educate them to better serve the needs of callers.

Literature relating to pet loss and grief is maintained by the hotline and available for mailing to callers who request information. Articles about the human-animal bond and grief are provided for the education of student volunteers and, together with the experience from the hotline, help to prepare the students for the emotional side of veterinary practice.

Many if not all of the veterinary student volunteers have experienced the loss of a beloved companion animal and are aware of the profound sadness and confusing emotions that can result. They understand that every loss is unique and they are trained to acknowledge the normal grieving process that callers are experiencing.

The Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline is not a mental health hotline. If the concerns voiced over a call are beyond topics related to pet loss and pet grieving, volunteers will help you find appropriate resources for your needs.

The Shelter Medicine Club's mission is to expose veterinary students to the myriad of issues surrounding animal sheltering and animal welfare issues. Veterinary Outreach provides interns with an opportunity to work first hand with experienced local veterinarians. Interns will fund raise for medications and supplies prior to the trip abroad. While in country, interns will assist the veterinarians with performing physical exams, giving vaccines, performing surgeries, deworming animals and assessing general health and well-being. All intern activities are under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. This is an intensive internship, valuable to future veterinarians, veterinary technicians and other future healthcare providers as well as those interested in seeing what it is like to work in a developing country. The internship is focused on giving interns a variety of experiences, deepening their understanding of the veterinary field, and broadening their global view.
