For those who don't have much experience with large animals, AASRP is a great way to ease into the farm animal world! AASRP is a club devoted to teaching students of all interests about the care of goats, sheep, llamas, and alpacas. Activities include various lectures on sheep/goat management, hoof trimming, sheep shearing, wetlabs, venipuncture labs, and visits to local sheep, goat and llama farms. They welcome anyone interested in learning more and interacting more with small ruminants which are rapidly becoming more popular as dairy animals and as pets.

Background and Mission: Despite their increasing presence in the collegiate environment, non-traditional students (NTS) are often overlooked and misunderstood, especially at the graduate level, with universities primarily catering to the needs of traditional students and lacking NTS support services. The definition of an NTS may vary, but a generally agreed upon definition for a non-traditional graduate student is someone who may be older (e.g., 25 years or older) than their fellow students and/or took a detour, rather than a direct route, from undergraduate to graduate school. This definition is inclusive of students who:
• Had a previous career/job before going back to school
• Are parents and/or have dependents
• Are caretakers
• Are military service members/veterans
• Employed full-time and/or goes to school part-time
• And/or financially independent

As we march towards a more inclusive environment within veterinary medicine, it is vital to support non-traditional DVM, MPH, and PhD students. Thus, the Association for Non-traditional Students (ANTS) aims to create a sustainable support network for non-traditional DVM, MPH, and PhD students at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). ANTS’ values and vision revolve around the following:
• Building community at Cornell, Ithaca, and beyond (including other DVM, MPH, and STEM PhD programs)
• Being a resource and sharing resources (e.g., student-parent childcare grants, mutual aid, and emergency funds)
• Outreaching to allied groups, programs, NT CVM alumni, and offices to further foster and advocate for the professional and social support of non-traditional students.
• Collaborating with allied groups that support the intersecting identities of NTS (e.g., but not limited to, FGLI, sNABV, PrideSVMC, WVLDI, GSVA, etc.) and also collaborating with multidisciplinary groups to support the diverse career pathways and trajectories of NTS at CVM.

The purpose of the CUCVM Dance Collective is to bring together the dance community within the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine by celebrating our enthusiasm for art, music, and dance. As a non-audition based dance group open to students of any level and style of dance, we serve as a creative outlet for students who would like a fun and casual way to express movement and meet others with similar interests during our bi-monthly open classes. In addition to this, the CUCVM Dance Collective also offers performance opportunities to those students who would like the chance to choreograph and perform. Such opportunities include our annual Spring Showcase, which provides student choreographers a venue where they can present their work to the entire community.

Dermatological issues are one of the most common reasons companion animals are brought to the vet office. They are hard to deal with, incredibly uncomfortable, and truly take a toll on our pets' quality of life. The first Pet Loss Support Hotline was set up in 1989 at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California at Davis. Cornell used their guidelines in construction of our own hotline. The hotline is staffed by volunteer veterinary students who have undergone extensive training with professional grief counselors. Volunteers regularly attend discussion meetings with faculty advisors. These meetings assist hotline volunteers in dealing with the personal responses to grief and educate them to better serve the needs of callers.

Literature relating to pet loss and grief is maintained by the hotline and available for mailing to callers who request information. Articles about the human-animal bond and grief are provided for the education of student volunteers and, together with the experience from the hotline, help to prepare the students for the emotional side of veterinary practice.

Many if not all of the veterinary student volunteers have experienced the loss of a beloved companion animal and are aware of the profound sadness and confusing emotions that can result. They understand that every loss is unique and they are trained to acknowledge the normal grieving process that callers are experiencing.

The Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline is not a mental health hotline. If the concerns voiced over a call are beyond topics related to pet loss and pet grieving, volunteers will help you find appropriate resources for your needs.

Student Pride VMC (formerly Broad Spectrum) strives to support, represent, and advance the interests of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and nonbinary, questioning, intersex, asexual, and otherwise gender/sexuality-marginalized (LGBTQIA+) students, faculty, and staff affiliated with Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). The Shelter Medicine Club's mission is to expose veterinary students to the myriad of issues surrounding animal sheltering and animal welfare issues. We collaborate with local shelters to host monthly clinics where students can gain hands-on experience through assisting with surgery prep and post-op care, administering vaccines, and performing physical exams. We host speakers on a wide range of subjects, such as careers in animal sheltering medicine, humane animal handling, rescuing animals during disasters, animal behavior, and pet overpopulation. We often work together with other clubs on animal welfare-related topics, and also host brown bag discussions on various issues.

The Small Animal Clinical Skills Clubs (SACS) at Cornell is devoted to providing students with opportunities to practice and improve their clinical skills.

We host lectures and hands-on wet labs taught by residents or hospital technicians that allow students to practice clinical skills on both live animals and practice cadavers. Previous club events have included labs on dental radiography and dental techniques such as scaling and nerve blocks.

Two of our most memorable club events include the annual vaccination and SNAP test clinics hosted in the fall and spring. These clinics are open to students, staff, and faculty of the vet school and usually draw in around 60 animals per clinic. The clinics are run entirely by club members and volunteers, and offer students opportunities to perform numerous vaccinations and blood draws under the supervision of our trusted advisers, Pati Kirch (LVT/Teaching Support Specialist), Carolyn McDaniel (VMD/Senior Lecturer, Department of Clinical Sciences), and Patrick Carney (Ph. D, DVM, ACVIM, Associate Professor, Section of Community Practice Service)

To provide education and information in various aspects of prevention, recognition, care and rehabilitation of injuries within equine and canine sports medicine and to promote the human-animal bond through activities that get people outside and working with their dogs. These activities may include agility, hiking, herding, tracking, Canine Good Citizen training and testing, and others as chosen by members. All breeds, mutts, sizes, ages, and fitness levels are welcome! Activities will be scheduled to provide students with a variety of dog-friendly options for relaxation and exercise. We want to create a space where we can relieve some of that stress through soccer! Soccer is a fantastic way to run off steam, have fun exercising, engage in healthy competition, and meet new people. Our intent for developing this club is not only to provide an outlet from school work, but to also help develop soccer skills, teamwork, and confidence in a fun and safe environment. The club is open to all who want to play soccer, both undergraduate and graduate students, with the idea that the grad students can also help mentor the undergrads in a less formal environment. The Dawgs are looking forward to playing on campus year-round, both indoors and out. We hope you can join us!
