Fireside Chat with Junko Takeda

Junko Takeda (professor, History Department, Syracuse University) researches and teaches the histories of early modern citizenship, globalization, revolutions, migration, and disease. Her work examines France's engagement with Asian empires and populations through the lens of multiethnicity and religious, racial, and ethnic violence. Takeda's additional interests include Asian American and Zainichi Korean histories. Her memoir-in-progress, “Moguri: Japanese, Korean, American, and Undocumented,” explores inter-ethnic tensions, statelessness, anti-Asian discrimination, and her experiences as un undocumented immigrant child.

Takeda was the first Asian American woman and woman of color to be promoted to the position of full professor in Syracuse's History Department and its first Asian American chair. She has been vocal as an advocate for Asian diasporic and Asian American students, staff, and faculty; first-generation college students (like herself); and undocumented and visa-insecure students.

Professor Takeda will share her experiences about growing up as an undocumented Asian immigrant child in the American South in this Fireside Chat, moderated by the Peggy J. Koenig ’78 Associate Dean of Students for Student Empowerment & Director of First-Generation and Low-Income Student Support, Luis Olivas. They will be engaging students in conversations about immigration trauma and resilience; minority stress and mental health; assimilation, cultural identity, and belonging; parentification and intergenerational tensions; immigrant human rights, healthcare and education access; and racial solidarity.
