Predictable communication at scale
An architecture for application coordination in a fast-paced, distributed world

Presented by: Doug, Jane Street Software Engineer

At Jane Street, we have many critical systems that rely heavily on inter-process communication and real-time message passing. As these systems have grown in complexity and scale, it has become necessary to develop better ways to reason about their behavior and to build infrastructure that meets the demands of data distribution.

In this talk, we discuss how state machines and transaction logs can serve as the foundation for predictable software. We also explore the systems engineering challenges we’ve faced in building Aria – our reliable, low-latency message transport – from the ground up. Aria enables teams to build systems using replicated state machines, which stay predictable and performant as they grow.
