On September 9, 1971, 1280 inmates at Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York rebelled and took control of the prison to protest the horrendous conditions. Four days later, New York law enforcement attacked, shot, injured, tortured, and killed the inmates when they retook the prison with force. After the retaking, the inmates filed a federal civil rights lawsuit seeking money damages for the injuries, torture, and deaths they endured. The complex litigation that followed for nearly 30 years resulted in the largest settlement for incarcerated people in United States history. As a young attorney, Cornell Law School grad Hon. Ellen Yacknin ( ret. ) became a member of plaintiffs’ litigation team. Her presentation recounts the events at Attica in 1971, and the complicated and historic civil rights litigation that ensued.
