Environmental regulation has been tremendously successful in reducing pollution in the United States. Yet, there is ample evidence documenting that people of color are disproportionally exposed to environmental pollutants. Economists typically point to the role of markets and socioeconomic factors.  Yet they have failed to explain the persistently higher pollution exposure of racial and ethnic minorities. Together, we'll explore the role of two new factors, (i) historic redlining & (ii) kinship, in explaining contemporary environmental inequities.

Neha Khanna's research covers global oil markets, economic growth and environmental quality, voluntary environmental regulation, and strategic behavior and pollution spillovers under the U.S. Clean Air Act.  On-going projects focus on the intergenerational persistence in exposure to pollution and the effects of sensory pollutants such roadway noise and artificial nighttime light. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE) and as President of NAREA.

Join Dr. Khanna and McClintock faculty-in-residence Nozomi Nishimura for food and conversation immediately following the talk.
