This is a day trip, it is NOT overnight. The bus will be departing on Saturday, October 21st from the North Campus bus stop in front of RPCC at 9AM. We will be arriving in Rochester at the George Eastman House around 11am. We will spend a couple of hours there before heading to the Susan B. Anthony House, and then finally the LGBT+ walking tour. We will depart from Rochester at 5:30pm, and will return to campus at approximately 7:30pm.

Please note that the bus and admission tickets have all been purchased and are provided at no cost to you. You will only need to provide for your own meal(s) while on the trip. This means you must bring a packed lunch.

Here is the program:

1) We will start our trip by a visit of the Eastman Museum.┬áThe Eastman Museum is located in the former mansion of George Eastman who was the famous industrialist and inovator who founded Kodak. Eastman was a pioneer in┬ápopular photography and motion picture film. The museum was founded in 1947 as an independent nonprofit institution, it is the world's oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. The museum holds unparalleled collections—encompassing several million objects—in the fields of┬áphotography,┬ácinema, and┬áphotographic and cinematographic technology, and photographically illustrated books. The institution is also a longtime leader in film preservation and photographic conservation. You will be able to tour the Gilded Age mansion (Think "The Great Gasby") with a professional guide and tour the current exhibits. Your fellow Acey Sieffert will also be a great resource during our trip and will talk to you about Kodak cameras and their history as she has a private collection of more than 115 of them!
Check their current offerings here: https://www.eastman.org/

2) The second stop on our trip will be the Susan B Anthony House. I don't know if you know anything about Susan B Anthony, but let me tell you that she was a true "badass" woman! Susan B. Anthony's life and work offer a glimpse into the events of both the abolitionist movement (her father was a friend of Frederick Douglass) and the women's suffrage movement in the late nineteenth century. Anthony was the face of the American suffrage movement and one of its primary organizers. Her actions contributed to significant progress in the inclusion of women in the United States political process. You will be able to tour the house with a professional guide and we will have a group discussion organized by the Susan B Anthony House staff on civil disobedience!
Check their website: https://susanb.org/

3) Our last thing will be a LGBTQ historic walking tour of the Rochester. You will learn about the history of "the Empty Closet" which is the oldest continuously published LGBTQ papers in the United States. It was begun at the University of Rochester by Bob Osborn and Larry Fine, the founders of the UR student group, Rochester Gay Liberation Front, and later transferred to the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley (GAGV) Check it here: https://digitalcollections.lib.rochester.edu/ur/empty-closet-1971-current?page=13. In 2010, the Empty Closet celebrated its 40th year of continuous publication. You will also visit other landmarks linked to the LGBTQ history of Rochester!
