22-Hour Quiet Hours Begin December 8

To support studying for finals and completing end of semester projects, 22-hour quiets are in effects from December 8 - December 21. Quiet Hours are suspended each day 5pm-7pm, but Courtesy Hours are always in effect. For more information, visit the Community Living Standards website.

Fire Inspections in HILC and JAM

Cornell must comply with city/state/national fire code regulations. In order to comply with those regulations, the University must complete fire safety inspections of all Cornell buildings including all residential communities/halls at specific times of the year that are mandated by Ithaca and New York State. 

Fire safety inspections will be occurring in JAM on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 9 and 10, 2025, 10am-1pm. Every room will be inspected.

Fire safety inspections will be occurring in HILC on Monday, December 22, 1:30pm-4pm. Every room will be inspected.

To prepare for these fire safety inspections, review the following document:  

• Community Living Standards: Review this link to understand what is not permitted within the residence halls.  In particular, review the fire safety, appliances, and decoration sections. 

Facilities staff, a Residence Hall Director/Area Coordinator, and the State Fire Inspector will conduct the inspections.  All rooms may be entered as part of this inspection process. Note: It is not necessary for residents to be present during the inspection. 

• You will receive a knock on your door and hear someone announce themselves by saying something along the lines of "Residential Life Staff, Fire inspections!" 

• You should be prepared to open your door and allow the inspector in to do a visual sweep of the space. If you are not in your room, they will key into the space to complete the check. They will also relock the room when leaving the space so please make sure you have your key with you. 

• Note: It is not necessary for residents to be present during the inspection.  

• Ensure that the floor area in your suite/room is free of personal items so that the team can easily enter and walk through for the inspection – NOTE: too many items on the floor is a violation of rules regarding egress.    

• You will be cited for any violations found in your room/suite during the inspections, and you may be subject to a $50 fine and/or conduct action. 

Common violations include and are NOT limited to: 

• extension cords/power strips without a breaker switch 

• candles/incense 

• Tapestries, flags, and/or jerseys (without flame retardant certification on file and posted in the room visibly next to the item) 

• more than 10% of the wall covered 

• any apparatus with an exposed heating element (ex: toaster) 

• spider lamps 

• anything hanging from, or within 18 inches of a sprinkler head (this is historically an issue in the closets, as putting anything large on the top shelf in the closet will impede the sprinkler's ability to pop open and function.)

• Decorations made from dried plants or artificial plants (any type of dried plant material is prohibited). 

• Battery powered vehicles (e-bikes, scooter, hoverboards) being stored or charged in student rooms and public areas. 

• Bed risers without outlets 

• Items hung from or covering sprinkler lines, smoke detectors or sprinkler heads.  

Please look at the Community Living Standards for more information on items that are not allowed in rooms. 
 
Again, you will be cited for any violations found in your room/suite during the inspections, and you may be subject to a $50 fine and/or conduct action.   
 

If found, prohibited items will be removed immediately, if possible, but if not possible, you will receive communication with a timeline for removing the violation. You may not be able to reclaim confiscated items until the end of the semester or until a confirmed plan has been discussed with the Residence Hall Director/Area Coordinator about removing the item from the community. Check the Community Living Standards for details regarding prohibited items and address any concerns to support a safe living environment for all community members.

Communal Bathroom Etiquette 

• Please clean up after yourself. Leave the bathroom as tidy as you found it.
• Wipe down surfaces after use. Keep sinks, counters, and mirrors clean for the next person.
• After showering, remove any hair left behind. Please gather and dispose of hair in the trash. Don’t rinse it down the drain!
• Flush and check before you leave. Make sure the toilet is clean for the next person.
• Dispose of waste properly. Paper towels, wipes, and hygiene items go in the trash.

A few extra seconds from each person keeps the bathroom clean and comfortable for everyone. Thank you!

Winter Break Bus Schedules

Heading home for winter break? The Student Assembly, in collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Students, has organized a shuttle service to Syracuse Hancock International Airport for students traveling home for winter break. This service will be available from Thursday, December 18, through Sunday, December 21. Transportation is FREE for all Cornell students!

Resident Advisor Community Hours have ended for Fall 2025. A new schedule will be shared in Spring 2026.

Laundry Etiquette Reminders

• Be timely with changing out your laundry loads so others can use the machines.
• Do not take other people's clothes out of a dryer and put the clothes on the floor.
  • If around 15 minutes goes by without someone coming to get their clothes, you can take them out neatly and place them on the table in the laundry room
  • Do not take others' wet clothes out of a washer and leave it on the table.
• If a machine is not working, submit a service request by scanning the QR code on the machine.
• Do not leave personal trash or messes in the laundry rooms. Clean up after yourself and respect others as we are all sharing the same laundry space.

P-Space Usage

If you are interested in using the JAM P-Space Recording Studio and Drum Practice Room, please email our P-Space Managers Rilo Oberg (rpo32) and Josh Magazine (jnm224) to setup a time to receive P-Space Usage Training.

You cannot use the P-Space to play music during Quiet Hours (11pm-7:30am on weekdays and 12am-9am on weekends).

Community Reminders

As a reminder, items should not be stored in the hallways or in the bathrooms. Please make sure that you are removing any boxes, shoes, suitcases, trash bags from the hallways and taking them out to the dumpsters in the courtyard. If items (such as bathmats, shelves, personal hygiene items) are left in bathroom, building care is not able to clean the space. Thank you all for your support in making our community a welcoming and clean environment.  
 
Every night, our RAs complete community walks to engage with our community and ensure safety. Know that they will knock on bathrooms as they complete their walks and enter all bathroom spaces. Please do not be alarmed. All we ask is that you respond when you hear a knock. Our RAs will enter each bathroom to check for safety and security concerns and facilities issues that may need attention.
