CU Downtown, an award-winning event that we can't wait to see you at! Join the Tatkon Center for New Students and Ithaca Downtown Alliance for an afternoon intended to welcome new and returning students to Ithaca. This year we are collaborating with Ithaca College and Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Explore downtown Ithaca and with the CU Marching and Pep Band kicking off the event at 12:30pm, stay to see student performances starting at 1pm and continuing throughout the afternoon. Take advantage of special student discounts and activities at retail stores and participate in the scavenger hunt. There will be lots of free giveaways as well!

Free TCAT bus shuttles will run from North Campus to the Commons all afternoon. Residence halls will be organizing walking and bus groups to help you find your way. There will be free donuts for the first 1,000 attendees.

This event is organized by the Tatkon Center for New Students, in partnership with the Ithaca Downtown Alliance, Ithaca College, and Tompkins-Cortland Community College.

Welcome to new JAMmies and welcome back to returning JAMmies! Please come join us for our first Open Mic Night of year at the JAM P-Space. There will be pizza and JAM T-shirts for attendees*. Performance sign ups begin at the venue starting at 6:30pm.

*While supplies last. T-shirt size ranges XS-XXXL. Gluten free pizza available.

Compost Your Waste!

Ready to change how you’re managing your food waste? Join our community in composting food scraps, napkins, and paper towels in the following locations, starting today! 

Kitchen Compost Locations: 

JAM Unit 2 Kitchen
JAM Unit 4 Kitchen

Each year, Cornell diverts around 10,000 pounds of food scraps from the landfill through the Residential Compost Program. Join me in thanking Anjali Asthagiri and Anja Minty, our Compost Managers, for volunteering to manage our kitchen compost buckets this year! They will be emptying & cleaning our compost buckets on a weekly basis. Please do your part to avoid contamination by placing only food scraps, napkins, and paper towels in the green compost buckets.  

Questions? Take Cornell’s Residential Composters course to learn more about composting on campus. This optional certification course takes under 20 minutes to complete and will answer most of your questions! You can also contact Anjali (aa2549@cornell.edu) and Anja (anm222@cornell.edu) with any questions throughout the year. 

Cannabis Policy Reminder

Over the past several weeks, the smell of cannabis has been reported throughout the JAM community. This is a reminder that while New York State has legalized the recreational use of cannabis for adults over the age of 21, Cornell University is subject to federal laws (per the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug Free Workplace Act) that expressly prohibit the possession, use or distribution of cannabis on University property, including all residential communities.

While the University prefers to handle a student's use of any controlled substance on an individual counseling and medical-care basis, such treatment does not offer immunity from local, state, and federal law. Possession of drug paraphernalia is prohibited, whether or not it is being used for use or consumption of drugs. A person may not be knowingly in the presence of illegal drugs and drugs prohibited on campus.
