Protecting Yourself from Potential Bike Theft:
Having a bike at Cornell can make getting around campus much easier. We want to make sure you are taking care of your items in the way that is best for you, particularly as the weather changes and folx start using their bikes more. Below are some general reminders about caring for your bike to ensure that your property is safe.
Tips to be Proactive:
o Always lock your bike up!
o Even if your bike is locked up please periodically check bikes stored outside.
o You can register your bike for free using this Bike Registration Form. That way if it ever gets stolen it can identify as yours!
o CUPD created an agreement with local cycle store Gorges Cycles and have a coupon code for Cornell students to have access to their Kryptonite Keep Locks for $46.00, if you are interested see the attached coupon and present it at purchase for a discount.
(These locks are harder to break into, and typically cost around 70.00 on the low end.)
o Don’t want to store your bike outside? Consider storing your bike in a bike room on campus! You can get registered and pick up a key at RPCC service center. (is this also true for south/southwest, if not should mention that service center as well!)
o Take a picture of your bike, and record your serial number to have just in case it ever goes missing.
Getting Around Campus:
o Worried about these Cornell hills? You can always use the TCAT-Bikes on Buses program to store your bike on the rack in front of the bus.
Getting Help If Your Bike or Someone Else's Goes Missing:
o If you see someone messing with other bikes on an exterior bike rack, tell a university official by calling CUPD (607) 255-1111, alerting your RA after hours, or emailing your RHD!
Make a police report if your bike is ever stolen right away. Be sure to have the location, and any information that would make identifying your bike easier.
