Louis Massiah ’77, an esteemed interdisciplinary documentary filmmaker and film producer, will discuss The President’s House: Freedom and Slavery in the Making of a New Nation—an open air, public memorial in Philadelphia that examined the paradox of liberty and enslavement at the founding of the United States. Exhibited on the site where Presidents George Washington and John Adams lived and worked, the memorial centers the lives of the nine enslaved Africans who were part of Washington’s household: Austin, Christopher, Giles, Hercules, Joe, Moll, Oney Judge, Paris, and Richmond.
