Thoreau famously wrote, “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” In what sense might that statement be true? Many millions of acres of wilderness in the US have been designated for protection by the government. Thousands of potential land developments and uses have been denied. With what justifications? What is wild land worth to us? What level of preservation is justified?
