Become a Language House Resident

SECTION 1. PROSPECTIVE LANGUAGE HOUSE RESIDENT APPLICATION The application to apply for the Language House for the next academic year usually becomes available in October and is part of the Program House application. The application is located on the Language House website at https://cornell.campusgroups.com/culh/become-a-member/ on the Become a Member page. The priority deadline for the Language House Application is November 30th, 2021 at 9:00am. The general deadline is December 14th, 2021 at 9:00am. This application is used by prospective Language House Residents, whether one has lived in the Language House already or not.

Please only fill out an application to live in the Language House if you truly want to live there. If you are offered a bed in North Baker Hall and you know that you are not going to take it, please inform the Residence Hall Director of the Language House as soon as possible so they can give the spot to someone else who desperately wants it.

a. All applicants must also fill out a Cornell Housing application.

b. Transfer students are eligible to apply to live in the Language House.

c. Students planning on studying abroad during the Fall 2022 semester who want to live in the Language House during the Spring 2023 semester do not apply to the Language House now, but must wait until the Housing Application becomes available, apply then, put a preference of the Language House, and send an email the Resident Hall Director of the Language House.

d. Current first-year students who would like to live in the Language House their sophomore year, must apply to be a Language House Resident.

SECTION 2. LANGUAGE HOUSE CONTINUED OCCUPANCY Current Language House Residents must reapply to live in the Language House the following year.

LANGUAGE HOUSE RESIDENT Membership as a Language House Resident is by application only. Language House Residents must be accepted to the Language House and reside in North Baker Hall. They must be a registered full-time matriculated Cornell University student with sophomore, junior, or senior status, who is a learner of the target language and can prove that they can speak at an intermediate level or higher.

a. Language House Residents, after applying and being accepted to the Language House, will be charged a semesterly activity fee of $100 per semester, which will go towards the cost of programs and events.

b. Language House Residents must have the House Meal Plan.

c. Applications for the Language House are part of the Program House application, which becomes available in October, during the fall semester.

d. Students who are applying to be a Language House Resident will also need to fill out a Housing Application.

e. A learner of the language means that one is not a:

(i) native speaker - one who grew up in a country where the target language was the dominant societal language.

(ii) heritage speaker - one who grew up speaking the target language in a household where the target language was not the dominant societal language.

f. Target language is defined here by one of the seven potential languages that make up one of the six language sections for the year in question. Potential languages are: Arabic, American Sign Language, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, and Spanish

g. An intermediate level is defined by having successfully completed or tested out of the second course of a beginning series (i.e., usually taken in the spring semester of one's first year – e.g., ARAB 1202, FREN 1230, CHIN 1102)
