CKB Hall Council

I hope the first couple days of classes have gone/are going well for you!

As you learned at your floor meetings with your RAs, Hall Council is essentially the student council for Court-Kay-Bauer! Similar to the student council, Hall Council plans programs for the community and advocates for the needs of the residents in CKB. It is an amazing leadership opportunity to have early in your college career, and it is also a great way to become involved with the Court-Kay-Bauer community!

If you are interested, or even if you think you might be interested, come to the first meeting. It will be an informational meeting, where we will discuss more about what Hall Council does and how you can get involved. This Friday, August 30th from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM, CKB is having an informational meeting to learn about Hall Council meeting in the Red Lounge in Kay Hall.

if you have any questions.  If you cannot attend the meeting, feel free to contact me (mp2298@cornell.edu) or your RAs.

Meet RHD Melissa

I am originally from Michigan and went to the University of Michigan not once, not twice, but three times! I got my BA in English Literature (focusing on writers of the Harlem Renaissance), a degree in Secondary Education, and a Master's in Social Work. I have taught English in Detroit Public Schools, served as a Writer-in-Residence in Detroit schools, and taught a variety of classes at the University of Michigan (Prison and the Artist, Mass Media, Student Teaching, Program Evaluation). After earning my MSW, I started my own democratic free school in Michigan. I served as the Director until moving to Eugene, Oregon 11 years ago. I didn't think I would start another school, but when I was dissatisfied with the educational options in Eugene, I did, in fact, start another educational institution. After 4 years, I handed it off to a dedicated staff and transitioned to serving as Assistant Principal and Principal to two different high schools. I am passionate about creating healthy, holistic spaces for young people and have spent my professional career dedicated to restorative and trauma-informed practices in addition to fostering equity and inclusion through anti-racist and gender inclusive work.

I wanted to return to my roots in higher education and worked at University of Oregon as the Academic Program Manager ad then the Intercultural Experience and Career Readiness Coordinator for the School of Global Studies and Languages at UO. My family and closest friends lured me back to the east and specifically, Cornell. Now I live in Court 1 with my 18 year old, Poe, who is about to start college in London in a few short weeks. I also have a 20 year old, Amaru, who is at Oregon State University. And you may also have the chance to meet my part-time golden retriever, Nola, from time to time. Fun Facts: I am a ceramicist and have a pottery wheel in my apartment (let me know if you want to learn to throw pottery on a wheel!), I love all arts and crafts actually and enjoy writing poetry, weaving on my loom, cross-stitching, creating stained glass, and making prints with linocuts. In fact, I have led creative writing, art, and theater workshops in prisons for many years and even helped curate a prisoner art exhibit for 6 years so I have a lot of prisoner art on my walls. I love animé and hope to start an animé night at CKB. I enjoy walking, hiking, biking, and being in nature and would love to lead nature walks/hikes as well.

I am thrilled to meet each and every one of our amazing CKB residents and if you need anything at all, you can usually find me in my office in 106B Bauer between Monday - Friday, 9am-12pm and 1-5pm. Feel free to email me at melissaestrella@cornell.edu anytime.

Next week I'll be sharing more about our fantastic RAs!

Community Reminders!

*Please continue to check the Campus Operations Updates page for timely information related to Dining, Service Center, Building Care, and other campus service impacts.

*If you need to call the RA On-Call, it is important that you call not text the on-call phones!

*As a reminder, items should not be stored in the hallways or in the bathrooms. Please make sure that you are removing any boxes, shoes, suitcases, trash bags from the hallways and taking them out to the dumpsters in the courtyard. If items (such as bathmats, shelves, personal hygiene items) are left in bathroom, building care is not able to clean the space. Thank you all for your support in making our community a welcoming and clean environment.

Every night, our RAs complete community walks to engage with our community and ensure safety. Know that they will knock on bathrooms as they complete their walks and enter all bathroom spaces. Please do not be alarmed. All we ask is that you respond when you hear a knock. Our RAs will enter each bathroom to check for safety and security concerns and facilities issues that may need attention.
