Hello residents of CKB! Welcome to Cornell! My name is Mel Estrella (they/them) and I am your Residence Hall Director for CKB. As some of you may know, Court, Kay and Bauer are separate buildings but one community. This means that all CKB residents have ID card access to all three buildings. Feel free to attend events and utilize common spaces in any of the buildings.
Every week, please keep an eye out for newsletter titled "CKBugle." Inside each edition will be information about upcoming programs, important reminders and updates, and more! If you ever want to include something in the newsletter, please email mp2298@cornell.edu. Thank you!

Meet Your CKB Team!
Meet RHD Mel!
I am originally from Michigan and went to the University of Michigan three times! I got my BA in English Literature (focusing on writers of the Harlem Renaissance), a degree in Secondary Education, and a Master's in Social Work. I have taught English in Detroit Public Schools, served as a Writer-in-Residence in Detroit schools, and taught a variety of classes at the University of Michigan (Prison and the Artist, Mass Media, Student Teaching, Program Evaluation). After earning my MSW, I started my own school in Michigan. I served as the Director until moving to Eugene, Oregon 12 years ago. I didn't think I would start another school, but when I was dissatisfied with the educational options in Eugene, I did, in fact, start another educational institution. After 4 years, I handed it off to a dedicated staff and transitioned to Assistant Principal and Principal to two different high schools. I am passionate about creating healthy, holistic spaces for youth and have spent my professional career dedicated to restorative and trauma-informed practices in addition to fostering equity and inclusion through anti-racist and gender inclusive work.
I wanted to return to my roots in higher education and worked at University of Oregon as the Academic Program Manager and then the Intercultural Experience and Career Readiness Coordinator for the School of Global Studies and Languages at UO. My family and closest friends lured me back to the east and specifically, Cornell. I live in Court 1 and have a 19 year old, Poe, who is about to start their second year of college in London. I also have a 21 year old, Amaru, who is at Oregon State University. And you may also have the chance to meet my part-time golden retriever, Nola, from time to time. Fun Facts: I am a ceramicist and have a pottery wheel in my apartment, I love all arts and crafts actually and enjoy writing poetry, weaving on my loom, cross-stitching, creating stained glass, and making prints with linocuts. In fact, I have led creative writing, art, and theater workshops in prisons for many years and even helped curate a prisoner art exhibit for 6 years so I have a lot of prisoner art on my walls. I love animé and am excited for the Demon Slayer movie to be released soon and am finishing up the series "Monster" right now. I enjoy walking, hiking, biking, and being in nature and would love to lead nature walks/hikes as well.
Please stop by my office 106B Bauer anytime!
In Next week's edition, you will meet the RA team!

Take Out Your Trash and Clear Your Hallway!
CKB share the same dumpsters during the academic year. They are located outside the main Court Hall doors to your right. DO NOT put your personal garbage in any receptacles inside CKB. ALL of your personal garbage goes to dumpsters and recycling outside of Court Hall.
Also, you should not keep personal items such as shoes, luggage, trash, umbrellas, boxes, kitchen supplies, etc. in the common hallways in your pods. This is both a violation of the Community Living Standards and prevents our Building Care Team from vacuuming the space.
As a reminder, respecting our common spaces and taking out your personal trash is part of the Community Living Standards. Please review these and email mp2298@cornell.edu if you have any questions.
RA Rounds *Every night, our RAs complete community walks to engage with our community and ensure safety. Know that they will knock on bathrooms as they complete their walks and enter all bathroom spaces. Please do not be alarmed. All we ask is that you respond when you hear a knock. Our RAs will enter each bathroom to check for safety and security concerns and facilities issues that may need attention.
*If you need to call the RA On-Call, it is important that you call (not text) the on-call phones.
*It is imperative that we all meet the Community Living Standards, as there is impact on everyone when they are not met. To see the CLS, please click HERE.
