Fall 26 Pine Barrens Trip

We will go on a multi-day expedition to the New Jersey Pine Barrens leaving in the early morning on Saturday, September 5 returning in the evening on Monday, September 7. We will try to work around when is best for everyone to leave and return, so exact times aren't set.

The Pine Barrens in New Jersey are a wonderful place to look for some really interesting and different herp species than we see in the more typical forested areas we have locally. The herp diversity there is amazing and very cool compared to the species you may have already seen in Ithaca or most of the Northeast. In addition to spending lots of time looking for some of the amazing herpetofauna in the unique Pine Barrens habitat, we’ll stop in the Poconos of PA on the way back and see some pitvipers!

Also planned is a tentative private tour of one of the Pine Snake preserves in the Pine Barrens from Emile de Vito, Biologist for the New Jersey Conservation Foundation!

This will be an intensive trip with a lot of time spent outdoors in a hot, difficult environment, and as such spaces will be limited to a fewer number of people and members who have participated in previous herping trips will be given priority. Transportation and lodging will be provided by the club. For lodging purposes, we will tentatively be staying in an airbnb/hotel/cabin, and attendees may have to share beds in some cases for space. Food will not be provided by the club and is at the expense of the participant.
