In the Spring of 1970, Cornell was home to the second ever Freedom Seder, created by Rabbi Arthur Waskow following the assassination of MLK. That year, almost 4,000 people attended the modern, liberatory, and interfaith service in the Cornell field-house. Two years ago, Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) at Cornell brought back this beautiful tradition to our campus, and held the first Freedom Seder at Cornell in over 50 years.

The Cornell Chavurah and JVP at Cornell are working together to continue this tradition for a third year in a row. We'll break bread together (literally) as Passover comes to a close and the Jewish restriction on consuming leavened bread is lifted.

Passover commemorates the exodus of the Jewish people from slavery, each year retelling this story and recognizing the precarity of freedom and the power of collective solidarity. As people around the world face violence, oppression, and genocide, it is our communities and our fused customs which allow us to create intersectional and radical movements of change. Our 2026 Freedom Seder will harness our cherished Passover tradition to celebrate our community and channel the power of mutual liberation.
