Black Students United (BSU) is organizing an outreach trip to Washington, D.C., aimed at fostering intercollegiate connections and deepening students' understanding of Black culture and history. This initiative will engage approximately 40 students, primarily targeting underclassmen from majors such as Africana Studies, Sociology, History, and Political Science, while also welcoming students from diverse majors who have an interest in Black history. The trip, scheduled for February 13-17, 2025, includes preparatory workshops, collaborative activities with Black Student Unions from other universities, and community outreach in D.C. Students will explore various themes in African American history, including resilience and activism, through curated educational content and guided reflections. By actively participating in discussions and peer-to-peer learning, students will enhance their leadership skills and community engagement competencies. Key milestones include finalizing logistics and participants by mid-January 2025, followed by the outreach program in D.C. This program will assess its impact through structured reflections pre- and post-trip, allowing students to articulate their learning outcomes and integrate their experiences into their academic and community lives. Ultimately, this project aims to establish a sustainable model for community-engaged learning, promoting civic responsibility and fostering a sense of belonging among students. By documenting and sharing their experiences, students will inspire broader engagement with Black history and culture within the Cornell community and beyond. This project is aimed to be mirrored in other underrepresented areas and regions, such as the midwest and south for future BSU trips.
