All first-year and all new transfer students are cordially invited to MAKANDI Welcome Ceremony.

Black Student Empowerment is delighted to invite you to MAKANDI, a traditional welcome ceremony that embodies the spirit of unity and togetherness. "MAKANDI," derived from Saramaccans, signifies being together or united – a perfect reflection of our vibrant and inclusive Cornell family.

At MAKANDI you will receive:
Official Greetings: Be formally welcomed to Cornell University by our esteemed campus and community leadership.
Networking Opportunities: Connect with fellow new students and current students, faculty, and staff.

This ceremony marks the beginning of your journey at Cornell, a place where we value collaboration, inclusivity, and the strength of our united community. Your presence will add to the richness of our collective experience, and we look forward to celebrating your arrival.

All black attire is requested.

All are welcome.

This event is hosted Black Student Empowerment, a center within the Centers for Student Equity, Empowerment, and Belonging.

Photos will be taken during this event to capture key moments and share the experience. These photos may be shared on Cornell social media and in marketing materials.
