Join staff from the Office for Spirituality and Meaning-Making, the Gender Equity Resource Center, and the Johnson Museum of Art for the first event in the Divine Dialogues series, focusing on artwork of the Virgin Mary in the Spanish Americas.

Mary, mother of Christ, is abundantly and significantly present in many different guises in Colonial Crossings: Art, Identity, and Belief in the Spanish Americas. Adaptations of her name and image demonstrate the presence of Spanish Catholicism in Indigenous communities and the creation of creole nationalism through the lens of a singular female figure. By assuming hyper-local identities and a miraculous reputation, Mary becomes both a tool of evangelization and a spiritual protector.

The Divine Dialogues series offers monthly events that explore the intersection between gender and spirituality, through a variety of formats and topics. Join us to engage in discussion, hear from guest speakers, and examine your own relationship to gender and spirituality.
